I don't think that font is legal, but then I thought the same thing when I saw it 15 years ago on a Land Rover Discovery in Llandudno so he must not have been stopped by the police. Or at least not taken any notice of them.

M5 is on a sierra cosworth would have to be a very nice cosworth to be worth more than the plate I would imagine

I think sometimes they are heirlooms and sentimental, doesn't always follow that the owner would have the money to buy the plate now but doesn't want to sell.
