Everyone else should give up then, his luck is ridiculous...
This. Lucky bd. I would be much happier if he was more of a git.I have indeed been a bit of a lucky git in recent years, however not on this occasion. Bit of a shame really, I was really up for it, spent a fair bit of time on it, and was very hopeful. You can't win them all though, as they say!
It was interesting how the final 20 were to be chosen.
The Lotus dealer that I took my test drive with said that not only is it my words, plus the star rating/views from the site, but also the dealer themselves input comments on me into a Lotus specific system too. (Fortunately, I get on very well with my dealer, so hopefully that side of it was ok ) - but to say, simply, there was more to it than the stars.
However, no matter what the competition - whether it's battle of the bands, whether it's star ratings like this, I don't know of one to have ever seemed to work. The principle if fundamenetally flawed - though, I must stress, I think they should have just gotten rid of it entirely and gone by the EVO and Lotus views. Of course, the idea is to drive people to the site though.
All in all it was fun to do, got people out in the new Evora and talking about it and best of luck to the final 20 who did make it - I'm very jealous

Apologies to andyroo, just re-read my earlier post and it sounds like I'm referring to you when I say 'car geek'. That is purely unintentional, even though posting on pistonheads makes us both car geeks in the eyes of many!
I do have an interesting mental image of andyroo now (sorry mate)the star voting system was a waste of time - anyone could vote on anyone as many times as they liked - hence why nobody had more than 3 stars after a while.
I echo other comments that have been made that a lot of reviews were written by Lotus fan-boys. I think (hope) Lotus chooses someone who HASN'T owned a Lotus, who has perhaps owned the competitive products - this would in my view help far more in building the brand outside of the already loyal Lotus fan-base.

I'm here, and also must assume I didn't make the cut.http://lotusdiaries.evo.co.uk/profile/martian
Tony - I did wonder whether they were assessing you in any way on the day, but I got the wettest day in August to drive the car on, which may/may not have helped, and besides I wasn't really bothering to 'sell myself' - far more interested in the car.

motoring journalism is generally so instructional, anal and left brain dominated ...
we need a kurt vonnegut or a peter carey ... someone with a totally newfangled style who looks at everything from a mad angle
problem is, people like this usually couldn't give a stuff about cars !
I dunno. Setright was a real left-brainer and he was very good.we need a kurt vonnegut or a peter carey ... someone with a totally newfangled style who looks at everything from a mad angle

That said, Bulgin was very original and creative...

Chevron, for what it's worth (not much sadly) I personally thought your entry came across as well informed and well thought through. Perhaps the judges were looking for something less factually accurate and more entertaining? You may have taken a small risk being critical of the car, even though it was just a tiny negative in the interests of a balanced view, they may have decided that 200 words leaves no room for being critical. Who knows? The thing is, going through lots of entries means you tend to notice those that stand out, even those you might not pick if you were judging everything purely on its own merits.
Did the tits'n'ass woman get through to the last 20?
It's worse - I'm a watch geek AND a car geek Chevron, for what it's worth (not much sadly) I personally thought your entry came across as well informed and well thought through. The person who called me to say I was in the final twenty said votes had nothing to do with it. I think the votes were just to draw traffic.I have indeed been a bit of a lucky git in recent years, however not on this occasion. On the whole I think it has been a very poorly organised competition. A great idea, but poorly run.
Congrats to those who have made it through. I hope it is a PHer who does win.
- It was about 2 weeks between me submitting my original entry and my account getting approved.
- By the time I was booked in for a test drive, the dealer told me that the deadline for submitting a road test had already past. I submitted one anyway as did loads of others it seems but I have no idea whether it actually was too late or not and whether I actually stood a chance of getting it judged.
- The dealer that was deemed nearest to me wasn't actually nearest. There was another one that other entrants had been to that would have been a bit more convenient.
- There was no mention of any deadline dates in the original email I received, or on the website (which still hasn't been updated!)
- Some people seem to have been notified that they didn't make the top 20, I haven't heard anything. You would think that they would email everyone to let them know the competition was essentially over for them.
- The star ratings are a joke and just confused things. Nobody knew whether they actually had any significance and as such voted themselves up and everyone else down. It's obvious who is doing it too because suddenly all the good reports disappear and it is the same average ones back at the top. I voted the reports I thought worthy of winning up only to see them disappear again 5 minutes later.
Congrats to those who have made it through. I hope it is a PHer who does win.

+1 I've suggested to Evo that the implementation could have been better.- It was about 2 weeks between me submitting my original entry and my account getting approved.
