This makes me laugh, not one person that i know would buy a £60k coupe with mpg as the most important thing. Which those costs are negated by the huge depreciation.
But don't the diesels hold their value massively better, too? http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3277086.htm
how much has that lost?

Still you fail to see the point. People penny pinching over mpg are not seeing the big picture. Once again, i don't know anyone with a £60k car that cares about mpg. Yet here there are people saying how great the mpg is on this fugly 6 series, & how ECONOMICAL it is. If you want economy, don't buy a £60k car as depreciation will be huge.
No, I think you are (probably intentionally) failing to see the point - the diesel is massively cheaper to run in every way than the petrol version, and frankly makes it look rather silly. Fuel economy is a significant part of that, even if it's not the biggest part; depreciation is also a big part where the diesel wins by a huge margin; add in the massive difference in BiK tax for company car drivers and the petrol just looks stupid. You seem to be implying that unless you buy a supermini, you have no reason or right to worry about running costs, which is just silly.

You know some very unusual people then.£260k car, sure, mpg is unlikely to be a concern
£160k car, maybe, mpg will be unimportant
£60k is verging on mass market - and mpg has a BIG impact on such car prices...as proved by 9 in 10 6-series sales being oil-burning.

Over 50mpg on a largely meaningless test, yes. I'd be surprised if many owners average more than about 40 over their period of ownership.
True. Still incredible for a 310bhp, sub-6sec, big GT though.Caulkhead said:
The new 911 does over 43mpg on the same test and is a fair bit quicker and that's on petrol. I doubt any owner of either would ever see anywhere near those figures in reality just as I never got near the claimed 42mpg for my 335d.
I doubt any 911 drivers get 43mpg either, although I suspect it'll get closer to its figures than this will. Ramses said:

You would be surprised. People don't get into a situation of being able to afford a £60k car by being frivolous with their cash - some of the most cost concious people I know are millionaires. Our CEO here at work lives 20 miles away, so a 40 mile round trip six days a week. He also has a pad down in Devon which he heads to every other weekend.
His car is a diesel S-Class. He's a millionaire, and could well have bought an AMG model for £120k plus, but he doesn't want to spend any more than he has to in travelling from A to B.

Range Rover, S-Class, 7 Series, Panamera, Cayenne etc are all best sellers. The Audi R8 V10 diesel will do very well too. Even the rich get bored with giving their hard-earned to Shell, the daily driver needs an element of frugality regardless of your enthusiast credentials.
Don't let your personal preference get in the way of reality
