How hideous. If I was after a proper Evo there's plenty to choose from as mentioned in the classifieds being a lot of car for 'little' money smile

I regularly drive standard petrol-turbo and diesel-turbo versions of the same car. The diesel is down on the petrol by 60 bhp but I can make a mixed A and B road journey of 30 miles into work as quickly, if not quicker in the diesel than I can in the petrol. The torque out of bends and mid-range punch mean less gear changing and more time on the throttle. I get 20% better economy during the same journey with the same driving style in the diesel.

If I put them side by side on the motorway, eventually the petrol will get me nicked quicker than the diesel, but the reality of driving daily on UK roads means the diesel is a very viable proposition.

Without a factory-backed rally team, the Evo is somewhat irrelevant anyway. Simply 'making a fun-to-drive sports-saloon' seems pathetic compared to the days when they fought tooth-and-nail with Subaru to make something to win rally championships, otherwise, what's driving the development? Customer service questionnaires?

When driving from Norfolk to Bedfordshire a couple of years ago, my Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 (stage 1 upgraded) was being rapidly approached from behind by the striking LED headlamps of an Audi A5 coupe. Traffic conspired to keep us both together and well within the speed limit but at one stretch, the both of us a had a dual carriage way to ourselves. Ahead of the Audi, I slowly squeezed the down on the accelerator, expecting to see those LEDs grow smaller in the rear mirrors. That's not what happened. As I accelerated harder, the A5 kept right behind me. Harder and harder I pushed until and still the LED lights weren't getting any fainter. Then at a speed that I did not expect (and driving flat out and as fast as I dared), the Audi slowly, but surely eased past. Expecting at least a 4.2 petrol Quattro on the bootlid, imagine my surprise when a 3.0 TDI Sport badge appeared to moon me as I conceded defeat and eased back the speed. Insulted? Maybe. Impressed? Definitely. Converted? Well...

I wonder whether the petrol vs diesel debate will go the same way as steam locomotives and clockwork watches or manual gear changes, in being superseded by more efficient and let's be honest, for the most part, better performing alternatives with diesel locomotives, quartz watches and Dual Clutch Automatic gearboxes.

All I can say is that I now have a respect for performance diesels that I never had before. That Audi A5 3.0 TDi Sport was travelling at speeds it had no right to, especially if it could return 40mpg whilst I could not keep up barely manage half the same mpg.

I agree with the posts about true Lancer Evolutions being homologations from their rally counterparts. However, I see no reason why in these modern times, a high tech company like Mitsubishi couldn't change how we look at fast cars by going the diesel hybrid route. Just look at the Audis and Peugeots winning at Le Mans these days...

What a disgrace.

As if it wasn't enough of a shame already to kill the Evo, they are now going to humiliate its name and legacy by soiling it for years to come with a piece of st diesel engine.

and therein lies the problem.........it isn't about getting 'pissed' or going 'fast' it's how you get there. I wouldn't expect the lumpen masses to understand that but this is PH.

Given several pints of 'Stella' or a bottle of Westlveteren I'd obviously choose the trappist speciality. However I have the feeling the plastic smirnoff brigade would prefer to feel the width and not the quality..............for shame.

ok mitsubishi should drop the evo name and leave it to history as one of the best cars for a b-road 4 wheel drift blast.

But I commend them for still wanting their cake and eating it, yes as thing move on we are going to see more and more performance orientated diesels, yes old school diesels were very noisy things but most modern common rail diesels sound alot better, you cant say a evo engine sounds......well to me anyway.

Tbh, I'm actually kind of glad. Since, as you said, Evos with a point are dead anyway, it'll at least be interesting to see how Mitsubishi's engineers try to make it feel. I'm guessing an emphasis on 'real-world' (i.e. 5-6 10ths) performance, so impressing road testers, but rubbish when balls-out compared to an older model.

Really? You can drive that, and tell it doesn't have 270bhp, it's more like 285bhp?

If they call it an Evo they're insulting everything and everyone ever involved in making the name what it is today. This is the most stupid ridiculous thing ever heard, I don't care if it's 'the future' an Evo should never be a f**king diesel!!! Fair enough the hybrid technology could be useful but ffs at least keep it as a petrol turbo. Or better still just leave the Evo name as a piece of history, don't do what Subaru are doing with the Impreza and just using the name as a publicity stunt.

It's sad that the once great Japanese manufacturers of the 80's and 90's seem to have totally lost the plot recently. From fire breathing rally monsters to diesel hybrids. Oh dear, were did it all go wrong?

How long will it be before they start going on about how much dirtier diesel engines are than petrols and them falling out of favour?

Automotive trends come and go and I think turbodiesels are the main one at the minute.

Do we know what engine they are using?

If it was, for example, the same sort of kit as the Capstone prototype that was about in 2009 http://www.capstoneturbine.com/news/story.asp?id=5...
That could be classed as a diesel electric, as the gas turbine it uses will run on almost anything, and they were using diesel for testing.

It's not a rally car any more and hasn't been for a while so as long as it's fast and fun I don't see that it matters what fuel it runs on...

I don't really want them to make a diesel Evo either. I do however believe that Mitsubishi know their st and they could even re-write the rules with this one. I think it's going to be one of the cars that will surprise us all. I mean when was the last time Mitsubishi made a bad Evo? Exactly.
