I'm sorry. What car?

It felt really good, certainly fresher than the Mondeos, Alfa 156s and the like I'd also been looking at, all of which had considerably less mileage on them yet felt much more tired. It was (for a bog standard diesel car) a superb drive. My previous experiences of diesel cars were generally negative, an old 2.3 Sierra, various 1.9 Vauxhalls, Tranny vans, Lagunas, Defenders and erm... Challenger 2 tanks, Warriors, that sort of thing. I honestly had no idea BMW were making engines on a different planet to the dervs I'd previously driven. I wouldn't exactly say I'm a diesel convert but I'm more than happy to own this one for a while.
Yeah, it is poverty-spec but I've lived in more spartan places, I'm sure it'll do exactly what I need it for and more.
never been in a 320d but have spent thousands in 204bhp E46 330d which was by far and away the best diesel i've ever been in. that said, i've not been in that many remotely good diesel cars to be fair, they've all been small diesel hatches i think Yeah, it is poverty-spec but I've lived in more spartan places, I'm sure it'll do exactly what I need it for and more.
Just to add - my girlfriend's Dad has an E46 320d on well over 100k and it is fantastic. Still looks like new, and all it has had is regular servicing and washed every week.
You might want to look into the swirl flap issue (not sure if it was sorted on later cars?) but besides that they seem to be very reliable. Congratulations on the new purchase

Follow up...I went to look at this car today. Deposit paid, pick up some time during the week.
Is this a Pistonheads first? A "what car?" thread ending with the OP actually buying a car that was suggested?

Congratulations, sir!
Thanks for the find. Although it is poverty spec, I was pleased to see it has the optional indicator pack fitted. Doesn't have full priority access to the BMW lane on the motorway though, cars weren't getting the fk out of my way on the test drive. My OH was in the market for another car back in July, after a wee prang meant we had to buy very quickly with a tight budget. I was keen for her to buy a 320d Touring, but her opinion was that estate cars are for 'old housewives' (she's 29..), even though we have two kids with bikes, they go on frequent cub camps etc, I personally think a Touring would have been ideal.
Before giving her the opportunity to read too many Autotrader ads, I whisked her up to Rochdale, and we bought a 2004 320d ES Saloon, a facelift car like yours, but with 150k backed up with full MD history. The later 6-speed 150 cars like the one you bought have the clear indicators and factory CD player as standard, unlike earlier ES models. I don't drive it very much, but I do find the lack of fuel computer a tad annoying. Other than that, it was a great buy for £3000. I'm sure you will be delighted with yours.

Cheers, good to hear positives.
