I find it very difficult to spot new reg plates nowadays - they seem to blend in (or is it cos I am so old I spend all my time concentrating on where I am going).hehe

When we were kids, we used to play the "how many new regs can you see" when we were out and about - this was mid to late seventies.

All my kids do now is punch each other when they see a 12 reg!

Give the guy a break - he's 19 with a brand new SLK. Whether it means anything to the middle aged on here is not the point, when we were all 19 we would have loved to 'exhibit' our success - peacocking is what teenage lads do.

To the OP - do what you want, you can't lose either way.

No I can't sleep, but when I do sleep I have nightmares of the number '12' following me everywhere I go and blank number plates everywhere!! frown

I'm a failure: my car only has a 10 on the plate, 2 less than the OP's 12. frown

Thanks

I could put it on retention for a year and see how things go, but then again I spent a lot on the plate, so I don't want it going to waste.

I'm saddened to see how difficult life is getting in England: Imagine having to make decisions like this at the tender age of 19, it must be really awful. Can you sleep at night? Do you break out in a sweat thinking about what the neighbours could think? You poor chap.
You should move to Germany. I have a 2008 reg car, but due to the German plating system, it's not possible to tell at a glance how old the car is. But luckily, people have other problems here, like keeping their jobs, feeding the family and so on, so nobody (including myself), really gives a fcensoredk anyway...
GET A LIFE and grow uprolleyes
who cares, relax and try not to get offended by trivial things like this.

we are animals who are competitive by nature, showing off is natural whether it be a genetic talent or simply flaunting cash, deal with it as it's never going to change.

idea

You could buy a new private plate - with a 12 in it.

Best of both worlds.

Am I the only person in the UK yet to see a 12 plate car out on the roads?

I'd put the plate on it, but then again there is no way I would spend that much on a brand new SLK.

I’m also 19 and if I saw you in one those it would just scream finance to me, there seems to be a lot of people my age living on finance driving brand new A3’s etc in an attempt to impress girls, quite funny really.

1. You don't know me
2. You don't know my occupation
4. The price difference between a brand new SLK and A3 differ..
3. Your post hasn't helped me in the slightest

Read the thread..

My friend to said to 'show off', not me.

I stated his age too, why haven't you quoted that part too?
If you can't make your own decisions regarding a fking number plate how the hell can you expect to get through life.
What?

I asked for opinions.

You do know opinions and decisions are two completely different things right?
Yes, but why do you need opinions from others? Why can't you make your own opinion up and decide from there?

You could be getting an opinion from a nerdy IT consultant with a diesel Octavia - and this being PH, it's even more likely!

Yeah, from a nerdy IT consultant who has an interest in cars. Hence why we're on PH. Your comment would of been valid if I posted the question on a different topic forum altogether!

But 1 & 2 apply to everyone else who's going to see you driving around in the car too, so the post is relevant. Sod the 12 plate, in fact, I would actively avoid buying a car with a current registration in case people thought I was vain enough to buy it just for that reason.

If you put your (rather good, I love 2-digit 2-letter ones) plate on, then you complete the "expensive Mercedes" look if that's what you're after. As we've proved, anyone can drive around in a 12-plated SLK if they want to spunk a few hundred a month on it. You however, seem a cut above that and so putting a clearly very expensive plate on the car proves that. There's no way a 12-plate is more impressive than yours, so if image-consciousness is the order of the day, put it on.

I wouldn't be worried, though. I deliberately bought a cherished registration which looks like a normal one, so that it means something to me and people that know me but doesn't draw attention. You should probably treat yours in the same way - make it your car, with your plate, and that's the end of it!

I'm 20, since we're sharing.
