Some of the models are still reasonable (not good) value. A basic Astra comes in at 13K yet still has aircon etc. In fact only a few hundred over a five door Corsa.

Similarly Skodas are pretty good value.

But most mainstream stuff is crazy.

I like the idea (and cost) of leasing. I don't like the ridiculously low mileage allowances or the 2-3 years of paranoia about keeping it mint such that you're not wallet-raped at the end of the deal.
The low mileage allowances are only for headline figures. You can tailor your mileage accordingly.

PCP might be for you then as you dont *have* to hand the car back

perhaps its a long-term plan by manufacturers to get everybody onto lease plans.

I just checked, a base Octavia and base Golf with the 1.6TDI engine are pretty much the same price. Equipment is swings and roundabouts - Golf doesn't have rear electric windows, but the Skoda doesn't have a jack for your MP3 player, for example.

The Octavia is bigger, but the Golf has better residuals.

So it really comes down to the space - if you need it, the Skoda is the one to buy, if you don't, buy the Golf.

Seat's equivalent is cheaper than both, but that's for a very good reason - they're definitely much cheaper inside.

With leasing you'll have to be a little flexible with model/make to get the best deal etc.

If you are though you can easily have a £30k car on your drive for less than £200 p/m with 6 upfront.

They are also not as fussy come to hand back time as you might think. White is a very forgiving colour!

The RS6 might be a bit of a gamble though, Ive read things about that cars that would make any accountant weep.
Well they have been £10k for years now and really due to low numbers shouldn't drop too much below that.

Also if you buy a car for £28k focus titanium well you have £18k of depreciation to pay for failures.
The suspension can go on them which is mega money but you can opt for coil overs instead which so many owners have that's under £2k fitted and will not break.

It is a 330km/h car carry five big men a la Layer Cake. Plus you just know when you turn up somewhere in that people notice it the boy done good. Women may enjoy the feel of the vibration through the leather seat as you max out the motor. No doubt they will give you what you want.

By some one that's for sure. Must suit the financial services guys very well. They probably long for the day that no one owns anything and it's all just debt that they can shuffle around on computer screens and then have huge amounts of virtual profits pour out the back. Doing everyone a great service no doubt.

Tempting. but in future I'm more inclined to buy a car for 6K and put the £200 p/m aside for maintenance.

Choice is what's key
Debt free and 100% owned is also a nice place to be

Cheap lease is usually stuff the manufacturer can't shift trough the dealer network, hence the limited choice and low payments as they have committed to a certain amount from the manufacturer.

I really don't want to get into a case study this evening as i've had a few tonight, but there is very little in it for everyone but the customer!

a golf is far nice inside than a skoda though. The seats and steering wheel alone is a deal-breaker for me.

Maybe maybe not thing is you'd remember the ownership period with a fat grin. You wouldn't about Kia Cee'd or other mundane £20k ist euro diesel boxes.
You might talk about mega mpg and good warranty.... Or you could be talking about 500bhp destroying everything on the road the lovely v8 roar

In 2006, I paid £5k for a V8 Grand Cherokee, with a £2k LPG system already fitted... Car had done 55k miles...

It's now on £118k and has been used to tow, trailers, caravans... Been offload... I've chucked everything at itsmile

I would be amazed if I'd spent more than £2k on maintenance in the last 6 years...

The money I've saved by not buying a new, golf, focus, etc etc, paid for thissmile

Now obviously everyone has different priorities, and needs...but the point I'm trying to make is, why spend £25k on a Golf or suchlike, when you could put that money into paying the mortgage, or if your that way inclined, buying toyssmile

I used to buy new cars, thinking that they gave me peace of mind - but with hindsight, cost me a lot more. Some cars I bought depreciated by £6k from list price in 6 months! I realised then that it was much smarter to buy nearly new - and the most I'd ever pay for a 'shopping trolley' car is £6k - anymore that that and I may as well set fire to my money.

It seems that some in the UK put the reg plate above all other considerations - doesn't matter if it's a shooping trolley car, they think that because their's is newer, it makes it somehow better! This seems to be a peculiarity of the mindset only found here - a form of false snobbery. (Doesn't matter that they're mortgaged and financed up to near breaking point in some cases - they want other's to perceive that they're rich and are willing to risk all to prove it, quite sad....)

We got our car new on Ford Options and when its up next year we are going for a used one.

After the house, car related bills are our next biggest outgoing. Hopefully going the used car route will help bring it down.
