30k?? Not a chance. id never buy a brand new car anyway, and if i did i wouldnt buy this. A 370z is around the same price and probably more fun. Back to the old arguement about new vs used, but id keep my RS clio 172 ahead of this. For a 6th of the price i could make it nearly as quick. Some of you will try and ridicule this statement, but its MY opinion. Not gospel
It already is nearly as quick, even without spending a penny on it.

IIRC, Evo Magazine scored a 6.6 second 0-60 out of the Phase 1 172, and Autocar scored a 6.3 second time from a 182. And I can't see the Mini being any quicker on the twisty stuff either, unless its billiard board smooth.

What it will do though, is be a lot more exclusive and hold MUCH more of its value than any Clio.

Yes thats true enough about holding value, my clio cost 1500 quid, the equalivent mini is about double that for a 10yr old car? I dont know about you but i dont normally worry too much about resale value, but then i am talking about a 1500 quid car not a 30k one!!

Same, but then thats because most of the cars I've bought recently are already at rock bottom biggrin

Seems like quite a capable car and I'm sure they won't have any trouble selling them. But for me, the price makes it a non starter!

I don't get it, do they not have an aluminium block to start with?
It would have cost tons to re-cast (and likely redesign) the block in alu for such a limited run!

Also, why bother with the reinforced pistons and crank, and then maintain the same power level? Surely they could have upped the boost a little bit...

If you only need two seats that means this is up against some very serious slmost new opposition that it just can't compete with. For 25k -28K you could have the definitive sportscar!

Wouldn't you rather have a barely run in 220bhp Lotus Elise SC that can crack 0-60 in 4.3 seconds - thats a full two seconds quicker than this (and 0-100 in 10.8 seconds) - that will also hold its value substantially better over the long term - think 60 percent retained value after ten years - as well as cost you no more in maintainance and fuel bills as well as having substantially more kudos and exotic appeal for you badge snobs interested in buying this tarted up MINI!

The Elise will run rings round it as well as offering superior ride comfort. Yes you can get more in the boot of the MINI but not a lot more. Not a convincing package. The MINI is getting vey dated whilst the Elise has timeless appeal.

Don't be so bloody stupid, you can't commute in a house.

This is what you should buy for £30k, you'll even have money left over for maintenance and fuel.

Just sayin'...
+1 You would have to be stark raving bonkers to choose a 220 bhp mini over a 320 bhp 1 series. For me BMW have thrown down the gauntlet for hot hatches with e 135M and other manufacturers will have to do one of two things.

1. Drop the price of their car
2. Increase the spec/performance to match or better the BMW.

Subaru have done this with the STi and I'm sure it wont be long before the others do the same.

Overpriced? Yes. I don't understand the comparison to the M135i though. The Beemer is 300kg heavier, and do you think it's going to handle as sharply as a stiffened, strut-braced Mini?

Each will have their own following. This GP will sell like hot-cakes no matter how expensive it appears. Bini has a huge following, you just won't find many of them on PH.

I will laugh quietly to myself when I see one of these crashing around on British roads, though.

A snip compared to the pathetic 4x4 version they tried to foist on J Public, hoping it would sell on the back of the WRC programme. Oh, that's right, they didn't get the paperwork sorted in time.
My friend did the driving for the demo video at MIRA, said they were...... average.
This thing makes my toes curl, too much time spent perusing the Ripspeed catalogue et al.

You forget one thing, very important... residuals.
Late (2008 on) Factory MINI JCWs have one of the best residuals, that's why I could buy another new!
I imagine the GP will hold it's price well.

I'd have the new GP - it's noise is fabulous -
(personally, don't like the wheels but as I need the extra room of rear seats for me it had to be another factory JCW).

The 211 bhp JCW does 0-62 in 6.5 and 148 mph - that's quick enough for me.

Did 33,000 hoot miles from new in the Chilli red one. Sold it and decided to get another.

Red again, but only roof and mirrors - you can't get that combo on any other new MINI (unless of course you get a dealer or paintshop to do it after). If you see a white and red flash, that was me!
