The new A8 is gorgeous imho, long and low and wide but still lithe
Totally disagree. The new A8 just looks like an over-inflated Audi A4. It has no 'wow' factor that the current S Class, XJ and to some extent, the 7 Series still has.
You are so right. BMW still seems to have lost their way during- and post-Bangle. It is slowly recovering but while fiddling away Audi has blown by them.
Re this car for us Yanks, it does seem like a great idea that has been very poorly executed. Of course they should have tweaked the engine. Say 650 HP, a raising of the rev limit, a fatter torque curve with maybe a right-shift to the power delivery. A more aggressive transmission setting(s) and a new design for the wheels. Not just one from their designer collection. And finally an interior that would surprise the Audi people. Not keep them laughing. Right now, they are not in the same league - in design, in materials, it fitment.
And yes, 25 of them of course. Gee is that a dumb thing or what? Unless they looked at this meager finished product and felt like selling more than 15 of them, even to us status-conscious Yanks would be a stretch.
BTW, here in California, BMW is really not the mark it once was. Audi is first, Mercedes is second, Jaguar, Cadillac and Maserati tied for unconventional people's third place, BMW for boring people's third place, Porsche Panamera and Aston at the yet-higher tiers.
(and whining on just a bit more...) I am not a BMW basher by any means. They hold a special spot in my heart when, long ago as a teenager, a rich friend of mine let me learn to drive a stick on his new BMW 2002tii. Still a classic, and the car that put BMW on the map with enthusiasts in the U.S. After seeing the porky V8-laden M3 this last round, I've been able to redirect two friends, long BMW owners, to move to Porsche. Sadly not kidding.

The current range of big BMW's (5, 7's) just look so 'unfinished' for luxury cars.
Like the owner ran out of money on the interior/exterior trim options.
Together with the typically awful 'orange peel' BMW paintwork, they just look cheap.
And they most certainly are not.
Compare and contrast with the delightful detailing which Jaguar currently have on their automotive portfolio.
Just a thought.

Other than the obvious 'because it's a 12 init it' response, is there any other reason for wanting a 12 over an 8? What does the 12 offer that the 8 does not?
I should talk at this point about the inherent smoothness that comes from cylinders in multiples of six, or the magnificence of a layout shared with Ferrari, or the sheer excess of the thing. But I won't, because it's pointless. Given the advancements in engine technology and refinement over recent years, the only reason I can think of anyone having this engine in a BMW 7-series is to get one over their neighbours.
But if you're in the market for a car like this from the BMW stable and you want 12 cylinders, there is only one answer:
The Ghost is around double the money and thus isn't even close to being a rival. It's also vulgar in the eyes of many and inapproapriate for many businesses to use. The BM at least blends in a bit.
The V12 argument; the V12 in the 7er has always been the sweetest, most refined and most powerful lump. In my E38 the 4.4i is thought of as the best and does 90% of what the V12 manages, it's more refined and pulls harder when into 3 figures.
For the majority of people the diesel is, these days, the tool for the job.

I love my 760i E65, I really do, a CL500 went to make room and I run a SL merc as well the build is equivalent if not better, the tech miles better.
Its been years since I looked forward to the drive to work and even more the drive home with the serene cocoon of 7ness and the DAB radio losing signal during the Simon Mayo confession its heaven.
A bargain V12 (used) that seduces with its competence.

Glad it's working out well with yours. The one thing that has moved on, significantly, with the later cars over the E38 is power. 286BHP was fine and dandy 10 years ago. Now, it plain isn't.Its been years since I looked forward to the drive to work and even more the drive home with the serene cocoon of 7ness and the DAB radio losing signal during the Simon Mayo confession its heaven.

I actually spend time in these cars and your statement is just wrong. The fit of a 7 is easily equal to the Mercedes and Audi.
I said "fit and finish" as one phrase as its used in car mags that way - perhaps I should have just said "finish" as imho the plastics in 7s and BMWs in general is noticeable inferior to Audi, MB, Lexus and Jaguar. And that goes for the E38 as well as the Bangle 7, both of which I've spent a fair bit of time in as well as driven. I haven't driven the latest 7 but I've sat in it and while its no Chevy Sonic or other horrendous American car, its no Audi inside either. Edited to replace reference to "utter bks"

And as for presence, I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree re: the Audi A8. I think its the most attractive of all the large luxobarges and at present, only the Jaguar XJ comes close, missing out in my mind only because of the slightly awkward rear treatment. The front looks so aggressive and attractive with the LED lights.
And as for being a bloated A4, I fail to see any significant difference between the way Audi treats the A4, A6, and A8 and the way BMW treats the 3, 5, 7 or MB the C, E, and S-Class cars.
Btw General, didn't realize we could see the pre-edited statements when replying to edited posts
