I used to put a hessian sack on the bonnet - it was quite amusing to watch the cat jump up, only to disappear a moment later as both slid off. The cat soon got the message.

If you aim correctly, they tend to leap into the air without too much contact with the metal work, which is better than muddy footprints/scratching they leave when they mount the vehicle; that and the hairs they used to leave on the soft top. It was certainly more humane as it kept them away from our house, the alternative being caught in the garden by my dog which did get messy...

Anything that smells of citrus.
My cats leave my cars alone for several weeks after a waxing with Dodo Juice Orange crush - but because I like my cats and I don't mind them sleeping on the cars I alwasy leave one car unwaxed.

It not so much the warm bonnet thing more a high vantage place to sleep undisturbed

Stan on the ricer (don't worry it's gone now - the car)

You could always just squirt them with a hose? They'll quickly learn they're not welcome. I love cats but I do sympathise with those who don't want them sleeping on their car. I remember a colleague of mine having an Audi A4 that, for some reason, seemed to attract every cat in his street to sleep on it. The roof and bonnet were scratched to buggery. I wouldn't be happy with that happening to my car.
