RE: GT86 'just the start' for Toyota
Discussion
In the 1990's you used to be able to buy the 220bhp MR2 Turbo (I had one, amazingly fast with a little bit of fiddling), the 245bhp Celica GT4 and the quite insane 330bhp (they lied about 278bhp) Supra TT.
A couple of years ago Toyota achieved what scientists the world over have tried and failed - complete utter invisability. What did they do exactly? Was it washing machines or tumble driers?
Great to see the GT86. Now all they need to do is give it some growth hormones and steriods then poke it with a sitck.
I also wanna see a 21st century version of this.

An Elise competator would be nice. Sub 1000kg, 140-250hp variants and ~22-30k price tag with 5years warranty
That would be great for sure, it would put Lotus out of business though wouldn't it?Im not a jap car follower what so ever, but regarding car design on the whole by todays standards (sorry tastes) and just generally overall, the GT86/BRZ is probably the nicest all round - price, looks, spec, space, etc, - car on the market today. Look 10 million times better than a 370z and frankly an exciting car in general!!
And fair play to annoucing that there will be newer/better/special models to come!!
Nice one!

Come on LG where are you?
Keep up at the back....

I can't be arsed to 'defend' the 86 anymore.
I'm happy with it out of the box. For what I want right now it's pretty much perfect.
Can't say the same of the Toyota dealerships though. On my third now.
PS. Here's mine on one of my running-in runs.

You clowns! The design brief for the Multipla was more than 5 seats, less than 4m; it wasn't meant to be a pretty sports car/coupe. It might look ugly, but there are very few if any cars that carry people and (some) stuff as well. You only had to sit in one to see the brilliance of the design; the fact it drove reasonably well was a bonus.LaurasOtherHalf said:

There was a 140bhp mk3 MR2 on sale at the same time as the Elise, but the Toyota was significantly cheaper. Which of those cars is still for sale?
Which company is still going strong? I love MR2s (had 3) and Elises (have 1, driven several) and I think there is plenty of room in the market for both.
Put a two door coupe bodyshell on the Auris front wheel drive hatchback, offer it with a choice of 180bhp diesel and 200bhp turbocharged petrol, make the interior black, conservatively styled and bland but spend some of the money saved on the drivetrain on more expensive feeling materials.
Job jobbed, modern petrolhead nirvana, though it will still of course have the wrong badge and nationality.

I love the SZ, but I don't think it's pretty.

... so why did FIAT give the Multipla a much more conventional makeover in 2004 ?Toyota killed their own market with the last incarnation of the MR2, they focussed on wind in your hair and looks of the car and not the drive, they are frankly awful compared to the old one. They last celica was OK but not massively interesting and there was no GT4 version, racing pedigree or real reason to buy one over the rivals and with no Supra as a halo car they just seemed to lose interest.
If they brought back those 3 cars along with the GT86 then they woudl go back to the era of affordable cars that made driving fun. There is a damn good reason why people still keep 90s jap metal on the road. Bang for buck there was and is very little that comes close.

New Supra would be the thing of my wet dreams
Let just hope they don't all get recalled if they do make them.
I took a test drive for a couple of hours this week in a GT86 (Scion FR-S in Canada) and it left me a little non-plussed. The handling can get entertaining, but the ride quality on our not so smooth roads here was very poor. Interior trim quality is particularly disappointing and I found the seats tight on space and comfort. Anyone 6ft plus is going to find it a squeeze. It costs $29,500+ taxes, which is what I purchased my mk6 Golf GTI for 18 months ago - at that price it just doesn't stack up. Wanted to like it, but the execution doesn't match the sticker price.

It seems so tantalisingly within reach too. The GT86 seems like a new Celica in all but name, a 6-cylinder engine would make it a Supra, they could turbocharge the whole lot and I still reckon there's scope for a Lotus-Toyota tie-up that would lead to a new MR2.
Why can't they just remake the MK1 exactly as it was, nothing needs changing including the pop up headlights. I love them so much but I can't deal with the constant fixing of 22 yr old car so make me a new one please Toyota. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
