I was lucky enough to have the space to put in an inspection pit when garages were built which makes life much easier...getting too old to be writhing around on my back...

Other options include

Using a pit
A 2 or 4 post lift
a scissor lift
or

roll the car onto its side and get to work smile
Meanwhile for the non professional mechanics lacking these items, a jack and axle stands will be the weapons of choice.
You can get a 2 post lift for less then a set of HUGE alloy wheels

Car rotisseries are brilliant. I just wish I had room to use one. Better men than me have made their own before starting a restoration.

Axle stand plus trolley jack plus any wheels taken off popped under the sill too. Belt, braces and bit of string for me!! Scares the piss out of me!

What I wouldn't do for a full sized garage with a pit or better yet a lift.

Trolly Jack, plus two axle stands, plus chocks behind the wheels...

You only live once.

I fit quite easily under mine without a jack or axle stands. smile In fact, just the other day I replaced a few bolts on my transfer case bracket while it was parked outside the house.
