The VW Air-cooled engine need not be rattling mess of noise. A sweet VW engine is a pleasure to drive and I have driven a fair few of them. They sound sweet and go well.

Even the Porsche 356 engine is esentially a VW air-cooled flat four evolution. If you have ever driven about in a Porsche 356-A, you'll agree that its a sweet motor.

Those who have had bad expiriences have probably been driving a poorly maintained sickly engine. This is true of any vehicle 'if ain't running right, it wont be nice to drive'
Couldn't agree more smile

+1 - We drove a '68 splitty bus for five days on honeymoon. Freshly restored and the engine was incredibly sweet.

This is lovely. I’ve always fancied a Karmann Ghia and I’ve long had a soft spot for the American habit of shoving Subaru engines into Porsche 914s … this looks like a nice combination.

Lovely piece of work and a great example of the Dub Scoob heavenly marriage. Great work! Flat four Scoob Karmann Ghia - yes please.
I built a Karmann Ghia with Alfa Romeo boxer engine a few years back for my brother, will probably convert it to subaru turbo at some point..

Guys you all need to spend a bit of time trawling The Samba smile I lost days on that site 8+ years ago! I think most of the bargains have long since gone though. Still worth a nosey. smile

Roughly a £1000 to ship including insurance from memory.

Then calculate the import costs here

I love that. With the right suspension mods it'll be a right (early aircooled) 911-botherer.

Rather than stick a Subaru motor to a 1970's gearbox and then plumb in a water cooled engine. Even with CSP brakes. You still have a car that drives like an early beetle.

They just bought a Porsche Boxter and put the fenders skins and bonnet from a early Karmann Ghia. So the car has all the appearance of a Karmann Ghia, but all the best bits of a Porsche Boxster.

I miss my old low light Ghia. As for the engine? Nah not for me, I'll stick with nigh on 200 brake of VW based air cooled thanks. Gotta love the induction roar from the 48 IDA's biggrin

It's lovely, in my opinion. I'd like the idea of living in an old cottage but I'd still want central heating. I like my classic cars with upgrades too. (Controversial, I know... but if we were all the same, life would be boring.)

It looks like a well-executed job. It's also reassuring that they paid attention to making it stop as well as making it go.

Looks lovely, you mention the modern engine being reliable. But i have a friend with t25 panel van with that engine and it is forever broken! I think it is more the coversion and vw gearbox that are the issues though, the engine has proved largely faultless.
So the engine is reliable then? Excellent Comment. Well written

Does anyone know if this would be road tax free? Or would the import date and modification count against it?

Surely the argument to make about sticking modern running gear in a classic is quite simple:

If the technology was available at the time, they would have put that lastest kit inside the car. The body and design is the part that really is / was dependant on era IMHO.

Still, fully originals should be kept for a museum.
