I was at Sussex Uni from '88 to '91. The first year I was in Halls, and for the next two years I lived on Sackville Road - the first year in Hove I tried using the train to get to Falmer and rapidly became disillusioned so got a moped, and the second year I had a car (and car-shared). Getting about the place wasn't difficult with judicious use of rat runs, and parking was easy cloud9 .

I believe conditions have deteriorated significantly since then (where I used to park outside the house is now a series of pay & display bays, and four lane roads have been reduced to two lanes plus more white lines than Kurt Cobain could ever handle) cry ; of particular interest is that there is limited and specific parking at the University campus which bans almost all students from parking their car on the campus whether they are in Halls or living off campus nuts .

Incidentally, the traffic scheme around the North Laines of the early '90s was designed by a cyclist sans driving licence based in County Hall in Lewes (and it was ccensoredp!)... jester

Unless you have several tonnes of shopping to carry it is pointless to drive in. Everything is within a reasonable walking distance of the station.

eg. of madness:
The above road is presently a NSL road. Under the new scheme speed will be limited to 20mph here.

Are you sure - I thought the 20 limits excluded A classed roads.

(cracking bit of road is that. There is a certain satisfaction in getting that just right )

It's part of "phase 3". The website says "Most major roads and the more significant or arterial routes beyond the Phase 1 central area are proposed to remain at their current limits, including the A259 seafront road, Old Shoreham Road, New Church Road, Ditchling Road, London Road and Lewes Road.".

What worries me is the word "most", okay it would be silly to put this particular road down to 20 mph but you never know with this council, cyclists do use it alot at the weekends. I suspect it'll drop to a 40mph at least.

Yes, I too like this road alot (especially on the motorbike) but there's better further out ;-)

I live in Hove, and we already have the first of the 20mph speed limits that they stuck in 12 month ago. (Nevill Rd, the bit running past Blatchington Mill School).

No one objected as actually its a reasonable place to have a 20mph limit, outside a school. But it's active 24/7, thats just silly.

So no-one, and I mean no-one takes a blind bit of notice. The police have already told B&H Council that they will not be enforcing any 20mph speed limits and the council admit that they don't have the budget for the traffic calming measures that are supposed to be installed alongside 20mph zone (pavement instrusions, crossing safe harbour areas, width restrictions etc). So in fact it's a bunch of signs and no enforcement.

Personally I think they are just relying on the 1 in 20 motorist who might obey the new limit to bring the average speed down. Not a good plan in my eyes.

By the way, I think the Green council is bonkers, and I can't see them getting a second term in B&H.
