RE: Porsche reveals LMP1 car

Interesting but I would have thought that the works drivers would have been better placed to take the controls in the car's first year. Shame if Long has ruled himself out, unless he knows something the rest of us don't.
Edwards isn't a Porsche factory driver is he? I thought they took Nick Tandy from Supercup?
You're quite right, I was thinking Tandy and typed Edwards. Not even blooming close! Although, I think they'd both be a good choice.Edwards isn't a Porsche factory driver is he? I thought they took Nick Tandy from Supercup?
One would hope that the way Porsche will look at it is an experienced car and a youth car, but time will tell. I think Jani has more chance than Heidfeld, then it's pick two to go with him. Will be interesting to see if Audi retain a three car attack as well. Maybe the old guard in their line up are on borrowed time, although I can;t see any crossing over.
I suspect porsche won't use any other current factory drivers other than Dumas and Bernard. They will still have factory drivers in GTE WEC (maybe not 2 cars of 3 but spread around privateer cars proton lizard etc) so that leaves space in the proto cars for new drivers. Don't see McNish or TK coming back, so possibly webber heidfeld jani would be my bet.

WEC, given a few more manufacturers will be the true pinnacle of motorsport (not F1) but then history dictates that is when the FIA will go out of its way to try to destroy it...
They've already started, by introducing those silly 1.6 litre engines to P1 for next year. Todt (The Penguin from Batman) has already stated that he wants to attract new manufacturers to F1 via sportscars. It's pathetic.vrooom said:
Clean design? look like Porsche got really good with photocopier.
You probably need to look a little more closely, because it is a new car. The fact that it's built to 2014 rules is a giveaway - so it's 100mm narrower than a 2013 car. Given the number of top chassis and aero people Porsche have employed on this project I would be very, very surprised if they'd borrowed anything from the Audi project. I suspect Porsche people would be insulted at the very thought.Yeloperil said:
As recently revealed in the press, Nissan will enter a LMP1, an all new car in 2014 via the Garage 56 entry method.
Not quite. Nissan will enter a garage 56 (outside of classification) car in 2014. This MIGHT pave the way for a P1 car to follow using the technology of the garage 56 car. So no P1 Nissan in 2014.Ahonen said:

It is unnecessary to pick sides and shout each others, both companies are pinnacle of the sport and it is exiting to see the Le-Mans legend Porsche challenge Audi who has dominated the sport since early 2000's. From technical point of view, it is really interesting to see the Porsche's true capabilities to develop a new car and see how it compares to Audi's rivalries during last few years (Peugeot, Toyota etc.). One thing is certain, Porsche is running petrol-hybrid powered car.
One never changing physical fact is that diesel fuel contains more energy than equal amount of petrol fuel. The difference will be made on how efficient you can make the engines and the vehicle in racing environment. But in the very end, diesel always wins. Like Audi's engine developer Ulrich Baretsky says, "noise (coming from petrol engines) is just one example of wasted energy".

Instead a fuel-flow regulation.
The Porsche is petrol/hybrid. Not sure what hybrid system (batteries/capacitors/flywheel), two-wheel or four-wheel drive. I anticipate Audi will be back next year, they tested a car with at least some of the 2014 regs (narrower wheels & tyres, for example) at Le Mans last weekend.
I would hope that the introduction of the fuel-flow regulation in 2014 would provide an opportunity finally to get the petrol/diesel equivalence correct, taking all of the differences into consideration.

Aren't the rules geared to allow the control of energy going into the car? I think the Audis already have smaller fuel tanks than the Toyotas and it seems that the Toyotas will get one extra lap per stint at Le Mans, I have seen rumours of two but can't believe that until I see it!zebedee said:

Audi must be stting it.
The end of a long era for Audi and the start of a new one for Porsche.
I cant imagine it wont be diesel if they are to compete with the R15's.
Why should Audi be stting it? I think they've proved over the years they're pretty good at this type of racing? They've no reason to fear anyone!!The end of a long era for Audi and the start of a new one for Porsche.

Since you're so sure it's the end of an era, I take it you've already put a £100 on Porsche to win?
i bet Audi beat porsche at Le Mans 2014. 100 quid, even money, no more than 3 takers

Yep - the whole point in the fuel-flow restriction is to account for some of the extra diesel energy density.
I actually wasn't aware of the new regulations. Are the new regulations already released to the public? I would be interested to see what kind of flow requirements there is for the next season. I have to look for that. Twilight1 said:

I wonder if Porsche could snatch Tom Kristensen from Audi that would be epic! And he has got a history with them.
errr Tom has a little more history with Audi.Of course they could but it would be a strange/dissappointing decision.
