Don't really understand the point of all this fakery...
BLAME THE NIMBYs AND THE EU!!Lots and lots and lots of people complain that cars make too much noise (usually those that have bought a house next to a busy road) As a result the EU has mandated "drive by noise" regulations. These aim to curb the amount of noise a car emits into the local environment. Hence, noisy exhausts parping/rasping and blaring out the back and gasping / gagling / snorting intakes greedly sucking air under the bonnet have become a thing of the past.
So, manufacturers still want to provide the occupants with a nice noise, but only when they are in the mood (you don't want a noisy exhaust when your just pootling along in a traffic jam at 20mph on your commute etc). As a result, a system that "artificially" boosts the in-cabin aural environment, but only when required has become the std fair of modern cars.
If people don't like it, complain to your MP that cars aren't loud enough.........

Personally I don't mind if a car doesn't sound good - if I choose to buy a ecobox so be it. What I cannot comprehend is why a manufacturer would go to great lengths to fake how a car sound. This is akin to silicone implants - all style but no substance. I just picked up my new M135i which I ordered purely off the back of watching Chris Harris's video vs the RS3. I had never driven, heard or even seen one until I picked up my car but I'm pleased to say MY GOD was it the right decision!!
Every petrol head in the world needs to just once sit in one of these and hear this new 3.0 turbo unit with the sport button engaged. It is to my ears THE best sounding bmw road car ever produced. What an engine (oh and it came with an ok car too, bit ugly but nice place to sit).
Although this is supposedly subjective, you're way off the mark there.Every petrol head in the world needs to just once sit in one of these and hear this new 3.0 turbo unit with the sport button engaged. Hmmm I actually didn't realise it had that. I thought you were joking originally. That will really offend me if it does do the fake m5 malarkey
See, I've always thought along those lines too, but from your first response when you didn't know about that, enthusing about how good it sounds, does it really matter that some of it is coming through the speakers? Surely the grin on your face is the important thing and to hell with everything else?Max_Torque said:

Matter? It does to me. I think it's truly pitiful ... I am truly astonished that people on PH find it acceptable.
So due to EU mandates on new car production, you think we shouldn't have anything in our cars that help us enjoy driving it?Also, why does it matter to you what comes through the stereo of someone else's car? OP likes it, but you want to stop him enjoying his car?
You don't like it, don't buy a car with it. Or switch it off.

+1 Fake sound is worse than fake exhaust tips, worse than fake carbon fibre, worse than fakes Rolex from Thailand, worse than MR2`s dressed as Ferrari. Its no different to chav in a 1.0 Corsa putting a bean can on. It's almost as if BMW conducted a survey amongst Corsa owners.
It's very different, because if you're not in the car you don't know it's there. You can see the carbon fibre add ons, you can see fake Ferraris, you can hear stty bean cans on Corsas. What you can't tell, is whether I'm listening to a pretend V8 or Girls Aloud on my car stereo.

I am always a bit weary of people opinions when they spend a lot of money on a car. I think there is a lot of Cognitive dissonance on this website, and its evident in most posts, I am guilty myself at times.
We all seem to praise the car we have at the time, regardless of the facts or the fact we havnt actually driven the competitions cars.
This below from the net says it all:
"A more common example of cognitive dissonance occurs in the purchasing decisions we make on a regular basis. Most people want to hold the belief that they make good choices. When a product or item we purchase turns out badly, it conflicts with our previously existing belief about our decision-making abilities."
Still, I think the M135 would e a cracking car if it looked a bit better and had a LSD. If I bought one I would probably think it was great.

It doesn't matter to me that India spends billions on space exploration while millions of Indians are starving. At the same time I find it reprehensible.
Get it? Change the word matter to something else if you like.

Couldn't agree more. I think the more populist term is purchase justification. We all seem to praise the car we have at the time, regardless of the facts or the fact we havnt actually driven the competitions cars.
