Thought this earlier, doing a wheel refurb of an A5 Saloon. I thought there was the A4 (saloon) and the A5 was there as a coupe and convertible (much like the new 3&4 series BMW's) What's the point of a saloon version of the coupe version of a saloon car?
Maybe people prefer the styling? As usual, people on PH know the market better than the big manufacturers...

God I hate choice I wish all car companies just made 1 car!
And on a serious note are they any different to their competition?
Indeed. Seems like everyone on ph would have us all driving around VW golf diesel estates. And on a serious note are they any different to their competition?
Quick enough, practical enough, inoffensive to look at, solid enough and "lots of low down torque". Whilst the Ferrari F12 is pointless.
Strange as it sounds that's pistonheads these days.
As you say, it's such a crying shame manufacturers actually offer us choice isn't it.

The Q3 looks plain boring and awkward in profile. Its little sister, the Tiguan is just as ugly. I've driven both and they are competent but utterly forgettable - sort of like a Germanic Japanese hatchback.
I despise them. No more utility than a Golf or A3, but higher riding body and poorer handling. The fact that you can now get an S and RSQ3 make them even sillier. E38Ross said:

Isn't it just.I also don't get why anyone should concern themselves by it, if you're not in the market for such a choice, who cares! If you are, then surely having a choice is better than not having one.
The buying public have become a lot more diverse these days in terms of their needs or wants. This has come about because the choice exists and people are using it. The manufacturers would not be pandering to it, if it wasn't selling.
It's a bit why Blackberry didn't see the need to diversify, got left behind and are up for sale at a tiny fraction of what they were worth 5 years ago.
All car manufacturers are having to conform to diversification or fear that they too will be left behind in the ever increasing 'sector' segments. After all, who knows what the next 'big sector' will be. SUV's being case in point, how many got caught out in that one, and all now produce some derivative of a 4 x 4!
Audi (VAG in general) have managed to excel in this because of they're use of platform sharing. Very clever if you ask me. If you don't like them, don't buy them...move on.

I think extra choice is a fantastic thing.

Actually, you can flip that round.Golf/A3 has no more utility than a Tiguan/Q3, is harder to get things in/out of (as lower down, bad for backs etc.) - esp important to parents with young kids, typically has less headroom (for the older kids), lacks the loftier driving position (easier/safer as can see more).
So, why buy the Golf/A3 when the Tiguan/Q3 ticks all the same boxes and offers a little more (as above).
The only downside may be "handing" but let's be realistic here, as long as it doesn't roll too much and grips well enough, that's what the vast majority want/need. No cars handle like they did in the 70s anymore. Few people buy utility cars for their handling anyway. Many of us petrolheads may place that attribute higher but let's be honest, we're in the minority. Besides, that's what hot hatches are for.

Think they've been to the Apple school of marketing- make the same product in loads of different sizes and market them as completely different products.
I would say it's more Android, not only the same product (OS) but for many different "brands" (Samsung, HTC, etc.). i.e. If Apple=Audi, then Android=VAG. Talk about trying to squeeze as many models from one base platform.
Mini has to take the honor in build pointless models which nobody buys.

Only models that Mini need to make is the standard hatch and convertible, the rest are a waste of time.
There are better models elsewhere you can buy from BMW.

If they're pointless, you better phone bmw up and let them know that all they're money is wasted and that you've done more market research than they have with respect to what the market demands and what's best for their profit margins. I expect a reply to this telling me they're response on how grateful they see that you know so much and decided to help them
