If you want to look at used cars vs new fetch the GTR along, or even a leggy Fezza 360.

You're right about the Zee and it was one we wanted to do in this series but we ran out of time with the car to put it together or, at least, shoot them together. A used E9X M3 was another one I had on the list.
Watch this space though; we can always revisit in due course. Am getting the sense we might have just exhausted the goodwill towards this series of stories though. Not sure what gave me that impression, call it my finely honed editorial instincts!

It is a chalk and cheese comparison for most buyers, if faced with this choice. The BMW M135i would (perhaps I'll caveat that with "should") mean you can forget about unplanned expenditures on running costs for the first year or so.
Anything that is seven years old, on the other hand, I would want a slush-fund account to cover unplanned events. I've run three Porsche, one after the other, and always had a £1,500 standby emergency fund stashed away. Over 16 years with the three cars I had to raid it twice; quite hard the second time (it wasn't enough).
Highly subjective, I know, but I've found Audi to be more expensive to run than Mercedes (although that is a comparison between only 1 Audi and 2 Mercs). The BMW's I've had were not quite as trouble-free as you'd like and cost more than the Mercs, but then again they were a more engaging drive.
I've always been a bit surprised that the Porsche seals and shafts issues with the later era water-cooled flat six 911 engines have been as well-contained as they have been. Combination of a very loyal user base and some support from the manufacturer. Just look at the size of kicking that Toyota got in the media over their recent issues.
In the context of how this ostensible choice has been set up, the BMW is the head purchase and the 911 the heart. I'd suspect the heart to be stronger if you've never owned a Porsche before, or a 911, come to that. I went from a 944 S2 into a 964 model 911 and then spent the next 6 months in self-denial that the 944 (for that time) wasn't the better daily car. Might be the same over this choice..

It's a response to the standard PH riposte to just about every car recommendation; "buy an M135".If you look at the 1st year depreciation on a 135i, it'd cover for a full engine rebuild on the 911.Many folk simply don't factor in the huge depreciation hit they take on new cars. Depreciation on that 911 has slowed down significantly and would be small over a year , so most likely very little in it, even if the 911 had a major spend during that time. I know which I'd want on my drive.
Similar performance, both RWD, both seat 4 (just about), both fuel efficient for their power, both six pots, both German, both fairly practical as daily drivers.
I honestly think a large number of PHers are a bit thick.
PH staff love the M135i; it IS great vfm and will be a bargain second hand but, it's very quick indeed, it's quite practical, it's good on fuel. I sometimes wonder if some of you have any idea what a good car is?

Are you paying to receive these articles? No! Does it take time to produce these reviews, it sure does so have some respect for the editors. There is a good mix of articles on here to cover most petrol heads; just because you don't like this series, no point wining on about it!
Well said.Surprised by the comments on rear and boot space of the BMW and actually found it amusing that it is being compared to the Porsche. I am over 6 foot and was very comfortable height and leg wise in the back seat when I went in one. The boot isn't the biggest in the world but it is only about 20 litres less than a Golf's boot.

It's the bhp. The reaction is similar to the one the old 135i got. I never understood that either, given that the 130i got such a tepid reception and was generally outperformed by most of its competitors. But, with the higher output engine in the same platform, the press loved it. If the M135i didn't have the power it does, no one would care. And it really should have an LSD.
