Dealer is a fool and at 13 weeks he should be looking to get out of that car.
Have you any evidence to back that up or are you yet another internet expert who knows how to run a motor trade business better than the motor trade?Saw a car locally which was a bit overpriced compared to others on AT but it was so close i thought why not, made an appointment and popped in. After checking over the car I asked if there was any movement on the car and he said no. He then said I would have to pay for the tax on top as it has been cashed in but he would throw in an MOT. Also, all the service history was missing but he had some photocopies from Merc which I could barely read and advised I could call them and PAY for a new book which they could stamp. Brilliant. Car was not hugely well presented and came with a st 3 month warranty from a firm I have never heard of but I was willing to forgive all of that if we could do a deal there and then.
Car was around 10k mark so asked for a few hundred off or for him to throw in the road tax for a year which I offered. 'No' was the response, 'that's the price'. Eventually he agreed to six months tax as I was walking out. For the sake of an extra £100 off he would have had my business. But...he had a st attitude, couldn't stop checking his PC and mobile while talking to me and I'm glad I left.
The next morning I went to a local Mercedes dealership, got great service, did a deal on a b class, £350 off a £13k car plus a years road tax. Done.
I was not asking for a grand off or being silly, but everyone needs to feel like they got a bit of a deal, especially with mainstream cars.
Tell me Daemon, what would you have done had you been the seller of the 10k B class? I have a sneaking suspicion what you might answer and it is probably why you are no longer in the profession........and please don't tell me all about your house, long walks and holidays etc etc...
Why should the dealer give away a high percentage of his profit so you could feel as if you got 'a bit of a deal'?

He wouldn't take £50 off, so i will play a waiting game to see when others come available. The car is 2008/09
Would you have bought it if he had? Wow PH seems to have turned in a set of keyboard monkeys defending car dealers now.
I work for a used car dealer. Finance is king- cash deals are not interesting as we earn little on them and struggle to sell other products like extra warranty RPP etc...
It's much easier to sell extra warranty on finance as we sell it by stating it'd only be an extra fiver a month whereas with a cash deal- you need to pay that cost upfront and most people are put off by that.

Yes, subarus are rare and hold their money. There is a certain clientelle for them. You cant compare them against a VW or an Audi as it simply wont stack up.
Just because you view it as being worth ££££'s less than a VW doesnt mean thats what its worth.
And yes you wouldnt normally go out of your way to stock one, however its the odd ball stuff theres money at. Chances are the dealer is happy enough to have it sitting there and will take his chances when the winter sets in that he'll find a customer.
I had a look round there and any 08 autos that are avail (2) are around the same price, so it sounds like its priced right.
I am inclined to take the advice on the car value from my local Subaru dealer. After him selling us 4 cars over the past 7 years. He has advised that an Non Turbo Auto is one of the hardest ones to sell and in his opinion the dealer is an idiot for not getting shot when he has the chance. Just because you view it as being worth ££££'s less than a VW doesnt mean thats what its worth.

Just because there are 2 cars listed on Auto trader does not mean thats the value of the car.
Brilliant.
You couldnt make this up.

Would you have bought it if he had? It's been corrected more than once already - but I cannot believe ANYONE still thinks that cash means discounts.
Commission on finance is often more money than they make on the CAR!!
There are people who'll advocate taking finance and then bailing out of it - there are ways and means to do this without penalty and you'll nett the 'discount' the dealer included because they anticipated their commission - but I'm not going to suggest that here

What has this example actually got to do with your original assertion that the dealer is a fool and at 13 weeks he should be looking to get out of that car?
Also, how do you know the dealer of the original car didn't get his extra £100 from the next punter an hour after you left?
Because the first car had been on sale for a long time. Perhaps male ego got the better of him but he, like the op's dealer, is a fool and poor businessman in my opinion. Also, how do you know the dealer of the original car didn't get his extra £100 from the next punter an hour after you left?

Hes just waiting to put the right bum on the seat.
Also, this is now coming in to the time to sell a 4 wheel drive car, why give away your profit when its coming in to its peak desirability timeframe?
If he did sell it today at a discount, what would he be replacing it with? Good used stock is hard to get. Yes its a bit oddball but chances are theres good profit in it if hes prepared to wait.
Its not about 'moving metal'. Its about making profit.

So your one experience can be rolled out across the country to ALL dealers including the one with this Subaru, that you've never met?
Brilliant.
Not at all. You asked for my experience, I gave it to you. Brilliant.
Some dealers I've dealt with are superb. Others hopeless.
Rightttttttt.........

WHY do you think you know more about the guys business than he does himself????
Discounting heavily is NOT how to sell cars.

Actually daemon discounting cars heavily IS the way to sell cars, anyfool can sell cars with big discounts, but not to make a decent profit and run a sustainable business.WHY do you think you know more about the guys business than he does himself????
Discounting heavily is NOT how to sell cars.
If the dealer has had the car for 13 weeks it may now be at the price that it owes him (SIV)so he has no room to offer a discount.
In fact its often better to sell old stock to the trade and take a loss, than retail it for a very small profit and then have to stand by it when the customer comes back with problems.

So some dealer wouldnt give you the discount you wanted, so you went and got ass raped in a main dealers to the tune of £3K more, therefore this Subaru seller should discount this car heavily....
Rightttttttt.........
Different car and spec. Main dealer car 2 years newer, less miles plus years warranty.Rightttttttt.........
The first garage wanted close to main dealer prices for the year. With nine of the benefits.

Not at all. Paid list on both my 911 and Tuscan. And both dealers were superb to deal with. I asked for a discount, they said no, I paid up. There is a thing called the Internet where you can see whether a car is competitively priced or not.
And a dealer sitting on a car for 13 weeks needs to make a move. Trade out or discount and move on. Same in any business.
PGNTuscan,
what you saying is true. Our search has widened and now looking at a couple of Evos instead of the Impreza. Some car dealers including the ones on here need to realise that cars are only worth what a punter will pay. Doesnt matter what other dealers have or what they list them for. dealers could be in different areas of the country.
Listing a niche car in certain areas will attract a lot of custom but in other next to non.
When i got my XC90 i paid a little over 8000 for it, but economics at the time the dealer wanted shot of it and made loss. But it made space on his forecourt where he sold 2 cars in a month where the XC90 was stood for 6 weeks earning him no money and taking up space.

In your "expert opinion" what time frame should a dealer hang onto a car then? There is a thing called the Internet where you can see whether a car is competitively priced or not.
And a dealer sitting on a car for 13 weeks needs to make a move. Trade out or discount and move on. Same in any business.
The reality is that a dealer will hang onto a particular unit as long as he still has a decent profit in it. With some cars big book drops mean that may be only a few weeks, with others it may be a few months.
Some dealers even have stock that celebrate a birthday with them. As has been said by others in the trade above some vehicles sell very well at particular times of the year, in fact can often achieve a premium. 4WD vehicles being one of them.
It may even be conceivable that if we have some early snow or very bad weather that he may put the price up.
Anyone ever mention that the best time to buy a convertable is in the middle of winter with snow on the ground?
