Isn't the 918 gamed for the ring such that it doesn't have the electricity boost after one lap?

It charges as it goes along, under braking and via the engine when it's not 100% used for propelling the car forwards.

For a timed lap, Porsche are obviously going to start with a full charge, but that's not to say that it'd be hopeless on lap two and above.

Unless it's in hot lap mode when it doesn't recharge the batteries. As I understand it this is the mode that the ring lap was done in. Which is why, according to some speculation, it was slower on the long straight than earlier in the lap.

what happens if porsche ferrari and mclaren dump the hybrid idea in a few years time , where will this leave these cars , and where will it leave the future , how will they improve performance without the use of hybrid , because thats one thing they will defiantly have to do , however they do it , improve the performance .

Considering this is the absolute cutting edge, the pinnacle of car design in the 21st century, am i the only one who finds the 918 looks disappointingly retro?
I think it looks stunning - easily the best looking of the 3 new mega cars. The P1 looks a bit st to me. No proportion, just a bunch of scoops and wings. Dramatic, but not attractive. Haven't seen enough of the Ferrari to tell - looks a bit odd though.

Out of curiosity, what is a GT3 CS? Or did you miss-type and mean RS?
I assume he means a non-RS GT3 in ClubSport (CS) trim.

I think the Porsche looks great and I am glad they are doing the (performance) numbers.

I suspect they are struggling to sell the full allocation though (compared to McLaren and Ferrari) so have had to revise their usually conservative performance claims so whether they have re-calibrated anything on the car massively is a bit of an unknown, I guess.

Good luck to them - it's a great looking car and a great technical showcase but I suspect it will be thought of as the new '959' (which I loved but is not favoured over the contemporary F40).

P1 is the best looker.....But that's it...Will post more tomorrow on P1 test drive
918 is still being optimised....
What happened to your other, more usual profile and login? No need to optimise the 918 now that it's being manufactured surely.

Photos from the test drive would be appreciated. Thanks.

Looks like Porsche have missed the boat. MC Laren have sold all of theirs. Porsche started their car first, looks dated, was the slowest and still is even after a scramble for better numbers. No sold many either.

There is no doubt that Ferrari will sell their and likley trump both cars.

Porsche is a company that cannot innovate.

You just shouldn't be able to get away with saying ridiculous things like, "Porsche is a company that cannot innovate", particularly in respect of the 918. I suppose you mean that, stylistically they have pursued a more conservative approach than their competitors. I personally love the (relatively) understated look of the 918, I also like the fact they're the only one of the three that have put a Nurburgring time out there.

Have to agree, this is the best looking of the 3 by far, just looks so right.

While the other two do look dramatic, they just lack the cohesion and subtlety of the 918 IMO. They are all far too quick to drive at anywhere near their potential anyway so going on looks and Porsches engineering pedigree alone, I think I'd have to pick the slowest (lol) of the 3 and go for the 918.

+1

I remember people making all the same complaints about the Carerra GT compared with the Enzo, Zonda etc - put it next to a Gonzo now and the Porsche still looks fresh and elegant while the Ferrari looks quite dated.

When the Carrera GT came along it wasn't the fastest of its contemporaries. It just happened to be the car that offered the grestest driving experience.......AND was bloody quick too. I think the 918 will most likely of the trio of hypercars, be the one that does the same. Be a complete package. It's all just speculation for now though so let's see what Chris Harris and the like give us when the time comes. There's a dark horse in the Porsche badge.

Porsche have announced the ring time, Maclaren have done one but are getting way more publicity about staying silent about it than they probably would by announcing it. I wonder are Ferrari trying to out silence everyone?? Because the silence about the LaFerrari is deafening.

The feedback from people trying the P1 is simply exceptional. A lot of very demanding, quite cynical prospective owners have been utterly won over by the car in recent days as Mclaren have been inviting test drives.

A few people have driven the 918 and they report positively.

Not a word from Italy. This is probably wise. No point in trying to shout when everyone else is shouting at the same time..

Mind you, I think The Ferrari The Ferrari will come third out of three if you are measuring things. I could never own one because the name of the stupid thing, even if I had the required money and was willing to spunk it on a car.
