ref 300SLs - living in the great white north 51st state, we get to see a lot of yank TV - incredible amounts of tat that, sadly, consists mainly of US versions of UK 'reality' shows - thanks a bunch simon cowell.

but there is also the Speed channel - and this regularly broadcasts the horribly addictive Barret-Jackson car auctions - you flip over to see what's on, and 2 hours later you're still goin 'How much!?!?" at whatever lot just crossed the floor.

anyway, to get to the point - a 300SL went for $2m + auction fees on there not so long ago. so $500k is a bargain.

I'm not sure where the idea that the 991 is so huge comes from - a quick search on Google seems to show that the 991 (C2S) is 1,808mm wide, whereas the 981 Cayman is 1,801mm wide. So if they are trying to draw a distinction in the girth of the two cars, it's pretty subtle at 7mm!

The 993 was 1,795mm wide, so that was a whole 13mm narrower compared to the 991, hardly noticeable really, and even the 964 was only about 15cms narrower than the 991, which is not a huge increase over 25 years and 5 generations of car, in my opinion.

Thanks for posting the photo link. Very impressive with some very interesting cars there. I did not expect to see a Lotus Cortina in the mix.
Thanks! Yeah, we get a bit of everything here.

Thanks!

@Bobberz - to your point, the size difference of the 991 compared with anything through the 993 is vast, and while the 991 is attractive, it has lost a sense of the svelteness of older 911s, not to mention that the tubbiness of the newer cars takes away some of the car's ability to really carve the canyons. It's a lot of car on a squirrelly road made bearable only because thanks to modern damping. Do you suppose the ever-increasing girth of the 911 is to draw more of a distinction from the Cayman/Boxter?

On a side note: I'm also a regular at the Great Falls C&C - what are you driving?

Oh wow, I didn't know there were any other PHers who go there! Unfortunately, I don't have any cars "worthy" of showing at Katie's, so I usually park my Focus around back or by the BB&T bank and go as a spectator. Right now the Focus is waiting to be repaired, so my dad and I have taken his MkIII Jetta VR6 turbo the past few weeks. I'm a pretty big guy (6'3" and ~250 lbs), usually have a beard, and can be seen with a blue/black camera bag slung on my side and a Canon SX20is camera in my hands. Recently, I've been wearing an olive coat with automotive/motorcycle pins on it (rocker style). I'm usually found hanging out with my friends Don (tan 1928 Ford Model A, red Austin-Healey Sprite, Indian Spirit motorcycle), Bill (red 250SL Pagoda, grey XK150S, red Siata 300BC, and Yeoman Credit Cooper T51), or Howard (multiple vintage Lancias, blue Daimler 250 saloon, green e36 M3 four door, blue Fiat Dino 2400, and multiple cars awaiting restoration (Bristol 401, Bristol 403, early post-war Riley, MG TC), a few SAAB 900 turbos, an e28 5 series, and many more Lancias).

I'm pretty much there every week if it's not raining/snowing.
See you around!

~Mike

It's not huge by modern standards, but when you compare it to an early 911, it's pretty obvious that it has grown quite a bit. That's just a matter of reality in our modern world and, like I said, I think the 991 does look good (and sounds amazing, too), it's just not the same as the old ones.

You guys still get Speed?! Down here, they replaced it with another generic sports channel. Not too miffed, I stopped watching Speed a few years ago when it basically became "the NASCAR channel". Discovery's Velocity TV (formerly HD Theater) is far superior, IMO.

That Boxster Spyder looks and sounds rather lovely, anyone got any more pictures / details?

Also have a soft spot for the R63 AMG, would definitely hunt one down if I had the money for that sort of thing!
