The Picanto; I looked at one for SWMBO and as soon as I opened the bonnet and looked at the welding it reminded me of a 30 yr old Metro. I came home and researched the crash test data. Sure enough, three stars, so we bought a Yaris (five stars) this was four years back so in both cases the old model.

Three months later she was hit from behind by a drunk using his phone and shunted into the car in front. The crumple zones worked wonders and she escaped shocked but unhurt. That wouldn't have happened in the Picanto.
Hardly comparing apples with apples are you - Picanto is in the same class as the Toyota Aygo, not the Yaris. Aygo is also a 3 star car.

As others have said, the mk1 Ka is a lot older than the other, but a good drive.
Again, a little older than the others, but have you considered a 306?
My experience is only one but I would avoid these 306's, I had one with a 1.8 petrol and it was horrible and wouldn't meet any of the OP's requirements except possibly safety. I know I was (am) inexperienced but getting it to pivot round the engine was easy (I did it once @ 20mph on a r'bout) and therefore if it's the OP's son's first car then maybe he will also find a way to point it the wrong way as me learns? Even my MG which cost more to keep going was better than my 306, glad I scrapped it.

Looks like a perfectly acceptable thing for 3 grand - I didnt even know you could get one with a 1.4 engine in that shape though!
SO the 1.4 is about 600 less PA to insure, so comes out around 1.7K which is not too shabby, I bet its a lethargic old beast though.

What's the insurance like on one of these for your son?

For the question of the Saab, it would be 7.2K (cheapest quote) for insurance for him. It's an 01 on 90K miles and was serviced 200 miles ago, for the other questions. Costs me £150 a year to insure!

Think old, range rover classic? The 4.2 lse my mum had would of been £400 more than my focus. So a diesel one should be cheaper.

HONDA JAZZ 1.2 i-DSI S 5dr (2006) £3,791...

As far as what I've read on PH, these are apparently excellent cars!

As clearly I have no idea, I did a quote, £4800... Not sure how old you are, but you're obviously not 17.

Because I would rather he had something slow yet fun to drive, than just something heavy, slow and bad on fuel. I hadn't dismissed this though as the focus is meant to be a good steer.

My eldest lad bought a BMW 316 as his first car. Cost him £1700 fully comp at 17.

1.6 facelift version?

200 nicker under budget, newer and has better spec than the one I previously posted - although, does have twice the mileage that you asked:

Glad we eventually found a good-un then. smile

How much does the Jazz compare to the insurances you found on the first cars you tried?

Revvy little engine. Very funny to overtake faster cars when they're not expecting it!

I thought the golden rule, from an insurance point of view, for a 17 year old lad's first car is one they (or their mates) wouldn't be seen dead in.

Nissan Micra/Note/Pixo, Vauxhall Agila, Cheverolet Matiz, Suzuki Alto etc.

Not that you'll get much in the way of thanks, still better than the bus though!

The perfect first car for all reasons; not much power so things can't go too wrong, pretty good feel and not endless amounts of grip so they can have some fun at very mundane speeds, insurance and running costs are nothing.

All my three spent at least 6 months in one of these (pea green with black plastic bumpers) when they started out and my daughter has since upgraded to the 1.2 with body coloured bumpers. I'm not at all embarrassed to say that I have actually had quite a lot of fun in it once or twice.

Of course, but insurance isn't always down to groups and power.
