OP, nice Merc.

To those diesel haters, this sounds pretty damn good to me:

Shamefull, truly WTF has happened to the world.
I know, but 40k per annum in a 4.0 v8 is not really affordable.
It is with a gas conversion!

In all fairness Ive nothing against diesels especially 6 cylinder ones, they have their place in the world and you get points back for it being an estate and JRG.

However, starting a thread boasting of your cars supreme diesel fuel economy is like pulling a minger then filming it for posterity!
Gas. Pah....

My father's gone for this game with a V8 S-type. He has to stop far more frequently (after finding an LPG station) and seems to spend half his life living with engine management lights/slight misfires, or visiting the installers for a 'slight' adjustment. I want something that just works.

I've had a modest 175 mile round trip today, and have seeing the views on here given it some welly. It still goes, and still managed 44.2mpg with said welly.

I'm curious with the diesel haters and wonder if they've just experienced the van/ford/vauxhall diesel experience, rather than the BMW/MB version which is far superior.

I would frankly be amazed if you could average 50mph and 50mpg over any real distance in a car of that size with a 3.2L 6 cyl engine. I suspect a bit of careful "trip reseting" has been going on here.

Look at the image. This was over 332 miles and 6 hours 43 minutes. I can't cheat that.

The average since last reset is about 2,000 miles and 43.3 mpg.

Sorry not impressed. Have driven one of these things with well over 600,000 miles (original engine), albeit in a previous 124 shape. Full oil pressure and very smooth to drive smile

Threads like this tend to be the 'kiss of death' for a previously healthy car.

hehe a bit harsh.

Thread would have delivered more if title and opening text were followed by a dash pic of the old barge thundering along an autobahn at an indicated 155mph, complete with full beam strafing and left-hand indicator set to continuous.

I agree, although previously I have been criticised for holding a camera at such time.

This is about the best that I can do. A E class getting on with what an E class does...

Even more impressive when you consider how long it must spend idling outside the airport when fares are late wink

Boring diesel haters. Yawn.
Any six pot diesel from Merc, BMW or Audi is a GOOD engine.

End of.

Impressive economy from that engine.

Whilst I agree that small 4 pot diesels are pretty much the most boring things on the road, I do rather like a good 6 pot diesel. I actually wouldn't mind one of these, it'd suit my commute quite well.

We just took delivery of a new 63 plate E220 CDi Estate with a four pot diesel, in that it's actually not too bad. It's a twin turbo lump, so plenty of go, and returns high 40s mpg, without even going on a decent run. On a run it should be 55mpg. You can barely hear the engine from within the car.

Agree though on the most part that four cyl diesels are pretty dull.
