RE: Don't demonise the Carrera GT: PH Blog
Discussion
This is of course nonsense. Whether I like it or not, I am in the entertainment business. I can tell you how something drives, I'd like to think I always do so, but my product has to justify itself through volume, and sideways equals more eyeballs. Owners of a Ferrari F12 do not look at me driving it at imbecilic angles - on a circuit I hasten to add - and think 'I can do that on the A420'. They just don't.
Yeah rightio, whatever...

Now that was a brilliantly written article.
Agreed.Im 100% sure that most people on PH would be driving a Carrera GT in a similar fashion given the opportunity/ability..... how would you resist the temptation not to?
Everyone on PH will say that they stick to the limits, only exceed them when safe to do so, etc but in reality that is not always the case. Without the want/need to push limits in all aspects of life humans would probably still be in the stone age
Respectfully disagree with Chris. He's judging in his own cause.
To me it's clear that he's glorifying "sideways-driving" on public roads. Why else blow the filming budget on all those erotic slo-mo drifting shots?
It's not enough to say that he condemns it, or that he denies inspiring it. If there was nothing wrong with it, he wouldn't need to deny inspiring it.
As for his "drivers should know their limits" argument.....well...the limit is what keen drivers actively seek out, and exceeding it is what Harris' videos portray. Let's stop kidding ourselves.
I'd almost have more respect for someone who comes clean. Someone who says they drift on public roads because it's fun, and that they do it in the hope and expectation of not getting caught or killing someone.
Driverless cars are coming and it's humbug like Chris's piece that will hasten the legislative path. If you're going to be run over, wouldn't you rather it was by a faulty robot than a man-child reliving his youth? I'm sure the 1.2m who die on the world's roads each year would agree.

Despite having loads of O Levels and that I read this three times, and still didn't really get the gist. Are you Gary Bushell? To me it's clear that he's glorifying "sideways-driving" on public roads. Why else blow the filming budget on all those erotic slo-mo drifting shots?

I don't even need to read the article, I know you are correct and it's so obvious that you have to wonder about the intelligence of some people.
Driver exceeds his ability to control vehicle at speed. Car crashes, driver and passenger (very sadly die). Happens pretty frequently all over the world from a Fiat Panda to a B52 Bomber.

Modern cars are GPS equipped and have clever ECUs. Why can't they be restricted in urban areas - not totally neutered, but allowed to deliver just enough drama to satisfy the owner, but not enough to cause a shunt?
Are you really suggesting electronically limited performance based on GPS location? That's not a policy I would advocate.edit: formatting
Nissan GT-R. Speed limiter linked to GPS, unlocks when you're on a track. The limit is still 100mph+ (google is failing me on the exact limited speed), but it won't go the full whack on public roads.

Have to disagree. Any car with more than 140 bhp is way way too much.
My FIAT Uno had 55bhp and frankly anyone who wants more is a speed-crazed maniac.pagani1 said:
Good blog as usual Chris. I understand newer spec tyres make the Carrera GT less twitchy near the limit and once you get used to the clutch, the car is fine for 95% performance. I suspect the remaining 5% performance would need driving lessons for all owners, as Lewis's dad will no doubt testify-he's doing a lot of that today.
Jay Leno too!Driving simulator games and car chases in movies reach billions more people than some obscure internet car review. Yet we are grown up enough to know there is a difference between entertainment and how we might make our way home in our own cars. Quite rightly we would not consider censoring the content of a harmless game or movie, just to please the odd over reacting lunatic.

Another great piece, Chris.
I think as many others have already surmised, it wasn't the car, it was the way it was being driven - given the utter devastation and the fireball as most people have already seen, I highly doubt it was being driven within the legal limits. The driver could have been doing that in a Fiat Panda (or as someone jokingly referred to earlier an MGF.. after the thread earlier in the week) - the outcome would have most likely been the same, if not worse, given the quality of the Carrera GT not to mention the higher performance brakes, etc etc.
The Carrera GT is probably a difficult car to drive quickly. That's why you don't do that on a public road and take it to the track.
It didn't surprise me one iota that the Daily Fail jumped in with a piece trashing the car as being dangerous. Another stand out piece of high calibre journalism by them.
