HustleRussell, it’s not BS. Take it or leave it mate. I don’t care. You try it next time and see what you think.
I particularly liked the bit where ther CCTV camera was able to show that the nozzle wasn't dispensing dispite the fact that you had the end of the nozzle was in the filler neck which in turn is recessed into the bodywork and obscured by the filler flap, you standing there etc etc laugh

jesus its 10/20P thats like 0.002 % of the cost of filling your car...

Do you realise how small amount of petrol you actually get for 10/20p, there is probably about that much still in the hose from the last person.

I think if i was said manager above, i would tell you where to go!

Infact even if they were doing it as a scam, say 1 million customers, that would only be £100K thats pocket change to someone like tesco.
The bad publicity when it were to get out would cost millions!

It isnt pocket change when you consider that Tesco only make about 2% margin average on selling product in their stores. They would have to sell £5million of food to make £100k.

I'd guess a leaky one way valve in the pump could mean some of the fuel in the pipe has drained back out and therefore needs to be replenished before any comes out of the nozzle?

I don't feel in the slightest threatened or offended, was merely making an observation. You stated that he was talking BS, and I observed that you were trying to get a rise out of him. byebye

Overall profit margin of 5.2% in the UK, excluding petrol, Tesco bank, etc.

You can't assume Tesco are honest and transparent because of their size. They recently got caught selling highly flammable furniture with fake safety labels.
They also got away with selling horsemeat and calling it beef. For months, if not years.

How on Earth did they manage to get away with that scam?
They didn't get away with a scam? They didn't perpetrate the Horsemeat scam.

I also mentioned the local price fixing of petrol the 3 stations do every morning. That did'nt go down well either, esp as I told her how they do it!!! Strangly she didn't respond to this!
Price fixing or price matching?

One is a very serious allegation, one is market forces.
They are legally different but IMHO technically the same.

I don't usually call people on BS as it seems a waste of time on PH but this storey is so obviously not true it's just weird. Why make something like this up? What have you acheived by doing so? I don't get it.
You hold the franchise for a local petrol station that competes directly with a Tesco filling station?

Glad that I'm not the only one. And it's not just one pump - it is most of the Tesco pumps I have used around the country. I use U/L for Smart car, Momentum for my 330 and diesel for my van. It has happened with them all.

As said, it's not the 10p, especially as I fill from near empty. Usual fill is 40+ litres (15+ in the Smart). So the % of the total is small. It's the principle of the feeling of being ripped off.

One is deliberately fixing in a cartel where you share prices in advance in secret and set the price - against the interests of the consumer. Outcome is a price that is artificial and against the interests of the consumer.
The other is a price set that other can choose to follow or ignore, but they are generally in the interests of the buyer as they can choose and nothing is set.
The latter will squeeze margins, the former won't.
The outcomes are very different.

Forecourt petrol has high supply, high demand, high information available to the consumer and tiny, tiny margins.

So no, not technically the same.

Now if you look into the supply chain - OPEC is more interesting to look at when you consider the base product.

Do you have any idea how much Tesco makes?

In 2013 Tesco Turnover was £64826 million and profit of £2188 million.

http://www.redmayne.co.uk/research/securitydetails...

So do I think they would rig petrol pumps to add £100k to the profits?
No.

I'm more worried about the Tesco satay chicken scam.

My misses had 6 satay sticks from the deli counter last week, yet when we got home we had been charged for 7.

It's outrageous and at 43p a time I can now see why they are making so much money.
