The point I was getting at was if you ask me what I remember of my first car (a mk2 Fiesta) i'd say it drove great and was loads of fun. I try hard to overlook the number of times it wouldn't start or how it was wobbly as a blancmange to start with then with Spax suspension practically rock solid. I'd struggle to go back to one as a daily now!!

My heart is saying GTI, and my head is saying GTD.
It's all going daft these days. Do people realize that this shoebox can outperform, outhandle while being much safer than say a Jensen interceptor ? Anyway cars like these are born for the wide open German road network, not our pathetic little overcrowded roadwork ridden ruts........Incidentally wouldn't this be around the size of their first and best Mk1 Golf ? With tartan trim too ? Well well.

This entirely for me. It has never really been a great car but we will see what VW have actually done with it. Always in the shadow of the Golf IMO. I think the only half decent small hottish hatch that VW made was the Lupo GTI and even that was a poor second in comparison to the 106GTI at the time.They have all been crap and no doubt this one will be too.

Oh I have no doubt it was more practical, better made etc. but the 106 was the undisputed star in the class at the time. VW make stuff that is good to drive but with more of a nod to what the man on the street wants as opposed to the true driving enthusiast. So they trade steering feel and absolute dynamics for looks, perceived build etc.Same with the current Golf R. Great car as an all rounder but in absolute driving terms the Megane has it. For more people more of the time the VW is the more compelling ownership proposition but personally I don't yearn to own a VW, new or old as there has always been something more interesting/exciting to drive.
So are they going to be doing a 5dr version? - I have been waiting for someone to release a decent manual 5dr Hot hatch in this class, as this is potentially the perfect car to suit my lifestyle.
I have previously preferred my hot hatches from the class above - 2 x Mk5 Golf Gtis, Seat Leon Cupra etc - but recently the Golf Class cars have been getting bigger and much more expensive.
The Fiesta ST is 3dr only and looks horrible, inside and outside.
The Clio is auto.
The 208 is 3dr only.
It is about time VW capitalised on their WRC success, even if they are in the process of ruining the top rung of rallying - I always thought WRC should be running cars from the Golf class as they are more relevant to what you can buy.

That's probably 'claimed' power on the standard turbo on very high octane racing fuel, or on a 'optimistic' dyno. I'm sure it will have exactly the same performance as the Mountune kit, or similar kits, in practice,

I pay more for a new car because its new and i can afford it, you know nobody has been out ranting it from cold every morning, every part of it is new, the tyres arent half worn, you know that nobody has been picking their nose and wiping it on the trim, nobody has spent hours in the drivers seat farting in it - nobody else has been shagging in it, you know its not been crashed and abused, its got a warranty not the remains of a warranty like a 2 year old car, i like new in the same way as i like new shoes, not someone elses hand me downs - thats why some of us prefer new and are happy to pay the premium to do so..

I had the same dilemma but chose the GTI and dont regret it, i love it. Part of me likes the fact its not a diesel and therefore not obviously a company car and somehow feels more premium.My heart is saying GTI, and my head is saying GTD.
Its thirstier than a GTD obviously but i break even on my business mileage at 16p mile, as long as it doesn't cost me money to use it for work then i'm happy.
