RE: Enough exhaust noise already: Tell Me I'm Wrong
Discussion
My Cayman S is going in on Monday to have the switchable Porsche Sports Exhaust fitted. I didn't spec it from new because I thought it was in conflict with a very expensive stereo upgrade but after all the GTS reviews on Youtube I decided it was necessary. I test drove one and it's nothing like as obnoxious with the valves closed. Always good to have choices.
I have a "pops & bangs" map as one of the selectable maps on the Syvecs ECU on my Sagaris but I rarely use it as, quite frankly, it genuinely sounds like it is damaging the engine.
It's quite amusing when used sparingly though. Especially in a tunnel -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0uzHiNYnds

Any exhaust note, overrun, pops or crackles on a 'decent' car, be it Jap, German, Brit or anything else, is a good think in my opinion.
HOWEVER
I do believe it should be achieved by work the owner has done.
I'm not into this 'out of the box' engineered exhaust sound. I'll make exception for the older 'M', 'AMG', 'RS', 'Prodrive' etc tinkered models, as there were far fewer around 10 years ago.
I've changed bits on all the cars I've owned apart from the 987 Boxtser and even then I was considering an exhaust change (even though the stock S exhaust sounded great on full chat). I did it because I wanted something a little different from everyone else.
Buying a car from the manufacturers, where just by pushing a button it emits contrived sounds doesn't do it for me.
Equally, I like the sound of anti-lag in the right circumstance; I wouldn't install it on my motor though.

My little Eunos developed a crack in the manifold on the way to a recent weekend hoon on the way to the Alps. It wasn't that loud, but it became unbearably annoying. I want to get it fixed and back to normal.
The best exhaust I have heard recently is the Aston V8, as a posted above wrote - quiet up to 400rpm, then it lets rip. I notice there's a tendency amongst Vantage owners to remove a fuse, so it's full on loud all the time. Why?
The worst exhaust noise I remember hearing on a car review, was some specialle Pagani. Every time the driver changed gear, BANG, a gunshot loud bang from the exhaust. That would drive me nuts. A deal breaker, even (if I had the £s).

Artificially created exhaust sounds are just wrong in my opinion. Why try and fool yourself? The same principle applies to fake bonnet vents and brake ducts that are only put on for show and do nothing. You need a Monaro with a Wortec exhaust for some genuine exhaust noise action. It can wail like a banshee and pop and bang like a machine gun, with some appropriate fettling of the throttle, yet can be civilised and quiet if need be.
I do like the sound of those AMG Mercs. There's one near me that I hear regularly. Not sure if it is deliberate or not, but when the owner starts it up, it emits a huge 'crack' before settling down to idle.

Exhaust noise is good. I had a sports exhaust fitted to my S1 Elise and my Europa, and it added a definite extra something to the experience. My Evora S came with a shouty exhaust as standard, which got shoutier in sport mode - made what would otherwise be "the engine out of a Camry" sound quite epic.
What I do struggle with is the cars that pipe the exhaust noise into the cabin via the speakers. That seems odd.

I suspect reactions to this topic will be neatly separated into two camps:
Under the age of 35: Great! love all that poppin n' bangin
Over the age of 35: Urgh! no thanks, i like to move swiftly and silently like a geriatric ninja in slippers
(as a just past 40 something, i'm in the second of those camps....... ;-)

I think it depends on the car.
People expect my TVR to make loads of noise and I love it. As above I've got a pops/bangs switchable map, although the standard one does it anyway. I get 'give it some' or the like shouted all the time, need to give the pubic what they want
Plus the extra fuel on overrun helps to cool the pistons, thats my excuse anyway

You're not wrong.
It's a contrivance. Created to amuse teenagers.
Next they'll rigging a Kia to play a V12 through the speakers and calling it enhanced driving pleasure.
If it ain't real, it ain't real. The exhaust should be designed to get rig of exhaust gasses as fast as possible, nothing more. Then, if it sounds good, it's because it is the real deal, not something to engineered to sound that way.

"Boxster noise terror"??
Yes, because you're driving like a c-unit in a built up area.
(no offence )
But that's exactly the thing. Implied speed/tttishness because of the theatrics is entirely unrelated to *actual* pace, which was well within acceptable boundaries. By way of example a dog walker waiting at the traffic island (c. 31sec) gave me a right mucky look even though I was doing about 20mph as I passed her. And the ridiculous blipping was the auto rev matching, not me. Honest guv!Yes, because you're driving like a c-unit in a built up area.
(no offence )
I'd do another run with the camera on the speedo/rev counter to prove the point but the car's just been collected, which is somewhat inconvenient!
Cheers,
Dan
