Usual rules apply - when you've reached the bottom, stop digging...

My car has a rear diff, a front diff and a centre diff.

Not being able to call the rear diff the rear diff would be a tad inconvenient.
But what about if there are TWO rear diffs? Is one the rear-rear diff, and the other the not-quite-so-rear diff?

And what about all those diffs even further from the rear bumper...?

Damn, but I need a T813. I don't know what for, but I know I do.

When I become King, the first thing I shall do is legislate to make the term 'rear diff' illegal judge

OK so I'll add 'when selling a differential' to the thread title.....sorry I assumed you'd get that bit! lol

Right so where were we, yes OK so you see a differential for a 330i for sale lets say.....(and yes there was a 330ix as well) but strictly 2wd is the point....

Why does the seller need to call it a rear diff?

You don't hear Jeremy Clarkson saying something like (and I'm not quoting it's just an example) '....and the F430's rear diff is amazing' in a car that is plainly known to be rear wheel drive do you?

I was not aware of there being an epidemic of tautological diffs. I feel so ignorant.

When selling a six string guitar. Why say 'string'? Everyone knows it's got strings. Why not say 'six guitar'? Actually, everyone knows it's a guitar so why not just call it a 'Six'?

Ooh, ooh I know. It's to prevent any confusion between the guitar and a similarly labeled gearbox.
