What do people think when they see BMW E30 going sideways ?
Discussion
Was it you I saw in a small, Devonshire town on Tuesday evening, OP?
I'm afraid I'm in the 99% here. I appreciate slidey aboutey control as much as the next guy, but doing it in town or suchlike is plain stupid.
I refer back to the "towing a mate in a wheelchair" thread of last week. It's not so much what you're doing, it's where you're choosing to do it.
If you want to go sliding about, that's great, it's an excellent way to learn to control a car and could well save your life if it comes to it. The thing to do is to find a large open space away from other people, set up some cones and away you go. Using street furniture as obstacles is only going to end one way and the sad thing is, it won't be of your making. It won't be your losing control that kills the little old Nanna, it'll be the fact that she stepped into the road without looking. Sadly, that's not the picture the jury will have painted for them by John J Jones QC, Counsel for the Prosecution. The jury will hear of a reckless young man, high on his own supply, driving what your average juror will see as a "stty old car". You'll be lucky to get less than 10 years, plus a lifetime of guilt.
In short, slidey slidey car go sidey waysey in a deserted carpark ok, the same thing along Oxford Street not so much.
Simon.

Maybe the driver goes out late at night on his own when there's no one around and drifts around on public roads because he enjoys the feel of it. Not to brag or wonder what anyone else thinks of him, but because it makes him happy.
If a driver drifts on an empty public road and no-one is there to witness, did it really happen?Better do it in Sainsbury's instead!

I am all for the empty car park and some cones option which is ideal the only thing is that is technically illegal albeit much safer option
Where as doing it on a public road with other people about is legal ??161BMW said:

Wait, what?
Someone got a tail happy rear wheel drive car a bit sideways, probably at very low speed, in the wet!!!?
Oh no, the cats for miles around must all be dead now!
Or someone could be doing it in public trying to impress people.Someone got a tail happy rear wheel drive car a bit sideways, probably at very low speed, in the wet!!!?

Had the odd sideways moment on public roads. Have had a range of reactions from a woman driver looking at me in digust to a white van man giving me a thumbs up
What do people / other road users think when they see BMW E30 3 Series which looks OEM going sideways in the wet :-) ?

If they've ever owned one, they'd know that in the wet they are a handful! I owned a 325 sport and an M6. Can't find the photo of the latter sadly.
That looks gorgeousThe LSD makes the handling a little better than having an open diff
Fact is these E30s are renowned for their tail happy behaviour especially in the wet
Something the newer BMWs lack (except the BMW Ms)

There are not a lot of places to practise except DWYB which is 1 per month and is quite a drive away
Suppose it's better than nothing
I remember being out for a blast on a wonderful empty scottish A-road and being approached by two sportsbikes bombing it round a fast corner closely pursued by an E46 M3 in a 4 wheel drift at probably 80+ mph, driven by an old grey haired chap with a big grin on his face.
It was absolutely wonderful to watch; the guy must have been a seriously good driver. So rare to see cars like that being driven fast and it really put a smile on my face, despite me being in the firing line if he'd lost control.

I got a cheer of a couple of schoolkids, came out of a damp junction and gave it some, nice and tidy but nothing special, hadn't notice the two kids sat on a wall waiting for a bus, they obviously appreciated me providing entertainment whilst they had a boring wait for a bus
This is just the issue. You hadn't noticed the school kids. Imagine drifting over a school kid. Not good.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
