Aston is old and bought by the same people who devalued Range Rover. Rich chav wagons, get one of these instead: http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyI...

The issue with the F Type is that it is roundly beaten by the competition; i.e. either Boxster, Cayman or 911.

If it as top of the class, it would be an easy choice, but at it isn't and you're making the calls based on looks and emotive reasons, surely you should live the dream and buy an Aston.

It also depends which car you have come from. A DB9 or Vantage may not be amazing cars in 2014, but it's not like they were ever bad cars! As such, if you're coming from a fairly mundane car i imagine either will still blow you away.

Anyway, a nice position to be in smile

No first-hand experience of either but I would not put an F-Type in the same class as an Aston Martin.
I'd agree. The F-type is a much better looking car.
It's not just about that though is it. It's very difficult to be subjective about cars like this & it isn't just about facts & figures - I'm pretty sure a modern hot hatch would run rings round most Ferraris from the 1950's as well as being more economical, reliable & comfortable, but I know which I'd rather have.

Both the F-type and the Aston are beautiful cars, no denying that, but like someone else has said, the Jag is an excellent car, but the Aston is, well an Aston Martin.

A few years back, I worked for a little IT company which got bought out by a big multinational. It made the 2 blokes that owned it very wealthy (top, top, top Xmas do that year!). One bought a Jaguar XKR and the other an Aston Martin DB7 Vantage (like the OP he'd wanted an Aston since a kid). In every way possible, the Jag was the "better" car - apart from the fact it wasn't an Aston.....
Having driven an Aston, the gearbox switch gear got on my tits within 30 seconds of starting it. Added to that the fragility and now wowfully outdated looks of the Aston, then it's a no contest for me.

Drove both when we were looking , no contest the F type is so much crisper and more fun to drive , the 8 speed box is a pleasure to use and the noise that comes out of it is just plane rude !!!!
Oh and the boot is fine , we have had no problems when going away !!
And it is just plain stunning to look at !!

Another vote for the Jaguar here. Nice as the Aston is, it's a little dated now.

A black F Type coupe rumbled through Salisbury last Saturday afternoon, it looked and sounded fabulous.

I absolutely reject the claims that a sodding Boxster beats an F-Type at all, let alone roundly. The Cayman keeps my hands well away from my pocket too. I just don't accept that the Jag is 'roundly beaten'. Porsche fans Porsches and that's fine. The F-Type is a fabulous car.

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't think the Boxster and Cayman interiors aren't anything special too.

I think the latest Porsche interiors are fantastic...

Biggest problem with the Jag is the weight; over 1700kg for what looks like quite a small car. I read the the latest EVO with the F Type S vs a Cayman S and the latter walks away from the former in a straightline despite the noticeable deficit in power/torque. Whichever way you look at it, that weight hampers everything...

I really like the look of the F Type. It is a little fussy, whereas the two Astons mentioned are anything but. They will age better.

I personally think Porsche are nothing special inside and out. Lazy design, and crappy sounding imo.

The problems with Aston are aging design, and the whole range looks the same, which won't help the speed at which the design ages. Same with Porsche, just fking stty looking designs that have been around too long. At least Jag have leant, and are now producing some great, fresh looking cars.

As a Boxster owner, I also don't think Porsche interiors are the bees knees.

I came close to swapping mine for the F-Type V6S last year as I'd like something possibly a bit more 'grown up'.
Love the look and sound of the Jag, but just a tad too expensive.

Never got to drive one either, so I'll reserve judgment on that particular area.
That said, my Boxster is possibly 400kgs lighter, and I'll sure as Hell notice the difference in weight just as I can when stepping out of the M3 into the Boxster.

But it's not the end of the world.

Very tough decision a dream for most. Toss of a coin for me I'd be more than happy with either if I was forced to make a decision I'd go with the F type it's a very good looking car and will age very well probably goes like hell too.

Don't Aston's of that period have a pretty terrible reputation for unreliability?
No.
Are you nuts? That period lasted roughly 60yrs!
Granted it wasn't much different for Jag smile
Eh?

He's looking to buy a V8V or DB9.

Both Gaydon cars.
Sense of humour not working tonight?

I've always loved the look of an Aston (all Astons) but I decided to swap my R8 for a V8 F-Type convertible. I really love it the noise is amazing and the handling is a lot of fun.

If you have dreamed of getting an Aston then get one, but in my (biased) opinion i think you would enjoy an F-type more.

Here is mine

That's the odd thing though , out V6S just does not feel heavy !!! The turn in is perfect with no understeer and pick the throttle up quick and it all just feels great !!!
It feels very similar to my Noble !!

I understand the Aston dream but the modern Vantage?? Not a chance.

The F Type doesn't just beat the gay Vantage up, it does a Blackwash on Gattings nose job.
DB9 is a different kettle of fish. Lovely cars. Buy one.
This sums up my thoughts. I'll never buy either but I honestly don't understand why people lust after the V8 so much as it does nothing for me. They sound nice enough (though AMGs, F types, VXR8s and more sound better) but they're a bit small and stumpy and not really sleek and pretty enough (DB9, new vanquish) or big and brutish enough (old vanquish, V550/600 vantage).

Different strokes though I guess, I know the Aston forum is full of self-congratulatory folks who think they're V8 vantage is the world's most desirable car so there must be something to like about them smile
