£2500 Fast Petrol Cars With Good MPG
Discussion
Some of the smaller sportscars such as old MX5, MGF, MR2 and the 1.9 Z3 may be worth considering as they are on the cusp of qualifying for classic status from some insurers. Some of them might have subsided owners club insurance too.
Any of them are fast enough for a youngster and give reasonable MPG for cars which look faster than they probably are.

I'm sure when I was 17 (which was 6 years ago) I wasn't this stroppy and could also operate an internet forum...
Me too, by the same age gap as well - though it didn't make my insurance any cheaper To give some serious advice to the OP, think outside the box. My first car was a 2.0 Mondeo 4x4, which cost £1200 to insure, very reasonable back then. This is because it's not a high-risk car, not one typically driven by idiots and then rolled into ditches. It was cheaper to insure than even the smallest-engined Corsa, for example.
The biggest mistake people make when trying to find cars cheap to insure is that it is not solely controlled by performance, but by risk profiles.
If you can compromise on the age, the Honda based Rovers with the Rover T16 engine in particular bend reasonably quick with rather good MPG. I had a 620ti which came with 197bhp, a 0-60mph figure of 7.0secs, a Torsen limited slip differential as standard and returned near 40mpg on my commute.
You may be able to pick up a Tomcat coupe which is a bit less Q-car/oldmanish depending on your point of view.

Doesn't cut much mustard with the brothers down at the local fast food establishment, innit. You may be able to pick up a Tomcat coupe which is a bit less Q-car/oldmanish depending on your point of view.

I expect the Aero/HOT models will command far too strong an insurance premium for most young drivers.
I looked at getting my 17 year old son insured on my 9-3 aero hot coupe, insurance was over 4K to add him to the policy, I pay £125 fully comp. Car is probably worth 1.5K. Its now sat in my barn while I figure out what to do with it (bought a Z4m and wanted it to go to a nice home, but can't be bothered to go through the hassle of selling it on the internet) Son is now in a micra Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
