RE: MX-5 prices announced!

Its all about expectations. The GT86 is in a league above for weight and size, but not a league above for performance.
Getting a bit picky, they both use a 2.0l lump so they'll produce ~150lbs. The GT86 will produce power higher up the rev range and the MX-5 will have a wider spread of power. I expect it'll make it a lot keener of out bends in the mid-range.
That's assuming it runs the same gearing; even if so, you could be a gear lower in the GT86 to be in the meat of the power.Getting a bit picky, they both use a 2.0l lump so they'll produce ~150lbs. I don't think they're "a league" apart - similar price point (now), near as dammit the same power to weight (as someone posted above), both driver-focused. My surprise is mainly at the eternal pasting the GT-BRZ gets on PH, opposed to the universal praise for the MX-5.
As indicated above, I have an MX-5 and enjoy it very much; I think this new model is the best looking of all generations, impressed at the weight reduction and think it's going to be a fantastic car. I haven't driven the Toyobaru and I'm not going to slag it off until I'm in a position to voice an informed opinion, which I feel a lot of the detractors do - condemning it by spec sheet without firsthand experience. The spec sheet praise for the MX-5 just underlines the 'fashion victim' effect.

Superb pricing. My MX-5 in 1991 had a list price of exactly £19,000:00.
25 years later and the price is £500 less.
How many other manufacturers can claim that?
I'd imagine it's economies of scale. 25 years later and the price is £500 less.

The Mazda MX5 is now a proven formula which sells to it's fan base by the bucket load. Back in 1989 it was probably seen as a slight gamble as there were very no real mainstream roadsters.
With the Mk4 going back to the Mk1 ethos it should be a big hit.

Does anyone know the exact spec of the ones that have been raved about in the mags and online? I'd be surprised if they were true base 1.5s with no LSD and standard suspension.
The first drive in autocar was in a 1.5:http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/mazda/mx-5-201...

Mazda was reluctant to mention the 2.0-litre (or the optional automatic gearbox) because it thinks that this 1.5 is the mechanical specification that shows the MX-5 at its absolute purest. I can understand that, and love it for what it is.
My first GG post after my week long ban is up!
I've just bought one of the last of the old models brand new as readers of my readers car thread will know. I did consider waiting for the new model but the price I paid for the old model made it a no brainier.
It helps I actually prefer the looks of the old one too but I'm sure once these become a more familiar sight it'll grow on me, I just hope the electric steering is as good as the old hydraulic system in mine. From previous experience of such systems it'll be in the wet when it's found most wanting-precisely the conditions when an MX5 comes alive.

Why buy new when you can get a mk1 for £1000?!!!
Where? Prices seem to be firming up for ones worth buying.celicawrc said:
2.0L - 160bhp.........no wonder they're reliable!
Torque? MPG? CO2? Redline? Inertia? The power figure is really only the start. Around 140bhp was about the most a typical 2.0 4-pot N/A saloon ever had.Looking forward to playing with the configurator, although I suspect like the Mazda 2/3, to get that one crucial option you actually want, you have to go up several grades and pay a fair bit more.
