RE: Vauxhall Nova: Shed Of The Week
Discussion
My first car - a hand-me-down from my older sister (she got it when she passed her test from my Nan)
I'll always have fond memories of it. It never let me down, not even once. I even picked up a mate, his mountain bike and my girlfriend on my first ever journey in it.
It would run out of steam going up the hill on the A505 to Luton. It was a struggle.

I had a red 1.3SR on an E reg. Fake Recaro seats, 6 clock dash, and no rev limiter.
Great fun, but would no doubt horrify any "young person" these days.
I dare say any of the cars my friends and I owned/enjoyed/drove back in the early 80s when we were teenagers would horrify young people now Rick!Great fun, but would no doubt horrify any "young person" these days.
No abs, electric stuff, airbags etc
Crikey, we even thought a Capri 2.8 was fast with 0-60 in 7 point something to 60 in 1981!
Back in the day I had a Mk1 GTi 1.8 Golf, my mate had a 1.6 205 Gti and our other mate had an SR. We would use a pub in a little village and use the lanes to get there. The SR would always be a little bit behind us when we arrived and the brakes on it would be glowing so bright I thought they would catch alight. Obviously no where near as quick as the other 2 cars but would hang on gamely enough and my mate ab-so-lutely loved it. In fact he bought an SRi version next in a Blue colour if I remember correctly.
One of those appeals in a masochistic kind of way, but a boggo 5 door no thanks!

I am struggling to understand how Shed couldn't find anything better than this..................
That said 20 odd years ago a couple of mates I worked with had Novas. One a GTE and the other a Nova Sport. I seem to recall the Sport was quicker. And sounded better with those webbers. I believe 20 odd years later he's just bought the Sport back.
Good man Tim.

I had a pond green 1.0 as the second car after I passed my test. Hateful hateful thing. The feeling that it was made of chewing gum wrappers obviously wasn't helped by the fact that it had followed a Dolomite that was built by a tank, but it was unreliable, slow, noisy, oh god it's all coming back now. The stalling and hot starting problem that had a group of us trying desperately to push it off a level crossing before the barriers came down. The timing chain cover it chewed a hole in after the tensioner snapped. The rust. Put it this way, the Montego I replaced it with was a massive step forward in every way.
Best buried. Best forgotten.

Never drove one of these, but I've driven the Corsa that succeeded it a few times. It wasn't very good, and I especially hated the handling. I can't imagine the Nova being better. They seem to be dependable little cars though.
I had a Nova 1.2 van as a daily ( going all round Wales ) and in my opinion it was way better to drive than the N-Reg Corsa 1.2 that followed it ( both were new )It has a certain retro charm, I suppose, but no. Maybe if it was a 'sporty' or 'deluxe' spec. 'Ordinary cars' of by-gone eras are interesting only if they're bigger (family-sized or above), or from a slightly off-beat manufacturer, in my opinion. This is just an old, small and boring car.
The first car I ever drove was a diesel one of these whilst having driving lessons but even so I don't hold any fond memories of it.
When I was in my yoof a friend had a black A reg 3 door which admittedly looked okay with the boxy arches but the ergonomics inside were appalling. I had an 83 reg Civic hand-me-down which was as asthestically like a potato in comparison but a far, far better car on every other measure.
You don't see any about now and there's probably a good reason for that.
