Cameras instead of mirrors - motor manufacturer development engineer told me only the other week that these won't get through type approval as it involves a TV screen in the car and it's illegal to produce a car where the driver can watch TV at anything over about 2MPH
I suspect he's wrong. They may not pass type approval but if that's the case I suspect it wont be because of the television rules; it'll be because type approval specifically states that cars must have mirrors.
Anyway, I suspect that there's a little misunderstanding here; it could well be "illegal to produce a car where the driver can watch TV at anything over about 2MPH"... just don't make the mistake of extrapolating this rule to think that any screen showing anything is banned.

Forgot to mention, German Press say it's front-engined not mid-engined
Front mid engined, engine is in the front but behind the front axle. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-engine_design#...Mr Tidy said:
Looks stunning (maybe because I have a Z4 Coupe)!
Please make it GM, but make a manual option and stick mirrors on it instead of cameras. Less gadgetry to go wrong is always a plus, and should be cheaper too!
Cameras are cheaper than mirrors these days! Just a yltt when dirty! Please make it GM, but make a manual option and stick mirrors on it instead of cameras. Less gadgetry to go wrong is always a plus, and should be cheaper too!
To all the people saying "it won't get made", "they'll never make it", I agree that Vauxhall/Opel don't really have the market position, but the VX220 WAS made, so was the Opel GT not even ten years ago.
That said, I really liked the look of the GT but when I was looking for a company Insignia they had one on display and the fit and finish on a number of parts (esp the roof) just didn't look up to par. Up close this made the car a lot less desirable as it looked from afar.
I hope this gets made but the only way I can see this happen is if they do it through some branding to make it viable, like the Pontiac Solstice.

Another motoring website has run a story saying Opel has ruled out production, stating it was “purely a concept study to show off innovations that may one day be found in an Opel production car.” They go on to say "it would suit a niche market that continues to shrink." Really?...
With the rebirth of the MX5, and similar (roadster) models from Fiat, Toyota, Honda etc, it seems to me this formula of small, lightweight and enviro friendly engined sportscars was on the up?

Meh. It would look better if it had production-style windows and doors. At least with some concepts they're pretty realistic so there is the small spark of hope that they could make production (even if the majority don't). With this, there's absolutely no chance and i wonder what the point of it is. "We haven't forgotten how to do exciting, but we'll never make anything like this".

They never really replaced the Opel Manta, so I can't imagine this actually coming to fruition. But hats off to them if they do - just don't badge it as a Vauxhall....
Agree. The Manta, original and 2nd series, were stunningly good looking cars and pretty affordable. We had a 1977 1.9 SR which I really enjoyed driving. Not so much mindless badge snobbery around in those days. My mate had a droop snoot Firenza which used to turn heads in spite of being a Vauxhall.Mr Tidy said:

As a former owner of a Z4 coupe I'd have to agree, stunning little thing if it was ever madePlease make it GM, but make a manual option and stick mirrors on it instead of cameras. Less gadgetry to go wrong is always a plus, and should be cheaper too!
Many years ago I remember Vauxhall doing the concept car which I think was the yellow one (bottom right hand corner) and thought that for Vauxhall it was pretty special, but perhaps not surprisingly nothing came of it. Perhaps it was a bit too much for people to get their heads around then. With so many good looking sports cars around now, perhaps any new model has to be pretty good to stand out from the crowd. This new car looks quite like the years old concept car, so I hope `this time' they do make it.

Bit narrow minded isnt it? Looks at garage...drives a Punto. Hmm. ;-) see how this stereotyping works?
Ah yes but I knew that it wasn't anything special and I brought it because it was cheap runabout. If this get made it won't look anything like the concept, it will be pretty expensive and it will get it's interior from the Opel parts-bin.
