Odd post.What has a EV drivetrain got to do with a vehicle lifecyle, or computers? Autonomy has nothing to do with the drive train.

- Market shifts to the new technology, inspired by the trendy (but expensive) leaders, but buy in to the mass market
- New technology has its draw backs (ironically on both products its battery related), but people put up with it for the benefits of the new technology
- Old technology still exists, but used in specific circumstances / use cases
- CEO is seen as visionary leader in the field and God like in the eyes
- I know a few Apple 'Fan Boi's who are also ordering Teslas of various models
Interesting comparisons on the mentality, culture and psychology of both businesses / products / buyers I think.

Be interesting to see how it works for them over the next few years, if they pull it off and establish themselves as a profitable car maker then it will be quite some achievement.

Great way of advertising. Tweak some software to make your car faster so the vloggers and miffed supercar owners will pit them against one another and stick it on YouTube to get loads of free publicity and keep it in the forefront every time a supercar is mentioned

You're asking the question that I can't answer. If you dont care about engines, cars, then EV may be just the thing. I don't view cars as white goods transport, I wish I did.Most are small/medium sized hatchback things like fiestas/A4's, passats etc.
I totally dont care about the engine in my current car. its there, it does its job. An EV would be quieter, better torque and more efficient.

Would you want an EV F type or aston? yean nah probably not. but then hypercars are already working down that path too..
Next time you are driving anywhere look at the cars around you, imagine what the people who own/drive them care about. Its not pistons thats for sure.

They also say the P85D is a bit crap around corners also. Being good in a straight line only is not something I think should be the be all and end all, not when you have so many good B roads in the UK.

Tesla has pushed the electric car market forward for sure but it's not some sort of charity drive - it's a solid business/brand in a world where brand/customers are almost more valuable than the product itself...
All of that is funding their expansion in 'more regular' cars and it's all feeding into their battery business

I meant it in the sense that it's all happening because Musk wants it to, he stumps up cash whenever it needs it, he's playing the long game of trying to change the world because he wants to and he believes in it - which happens to involve selling loads of cars. No matter what we think of the guy company car, it is a game changer company. It brought about a paragon shift in the automotive industry, other car makers tried and then quietly dropped or didnt market their products as aggressively. They have a fear - the car industry revolves around hydrocarbons. They need the drip gained from serving and keeping these cars on the road. An electric vehicle drops that feed. Hence a lot of interest in range extenders - keep an ic engine in the mix so you keep them comming back.
The way forward is to white goods them - you buy a washing machine its not being taken for an oil change every 6000 washes.... An annual service ? Pffft.... They tried to keep that part very low key, but as people wake up to the whole life cost and realise that the high sticker price is offset by the running costs then they start to notice. Why do you think other car manufacturers are now trying to play catch up ? The race is on to get on top of the game with EV's city center emissions are going to get draconian as we become more populated and people will turn to ev's nothing about the green credentials but simply that the ev is a much cheaper option.
Batteries are improving, power density is increasing and weight is decreasing. range is also on the up. a 500 mile charge in 15 minutes isnt that far away.
covering a 100k milage with an ic car what would the cost be ? oil changes filters fuel brakes etc
they are saying an electric car could cover 300k pretty easily. 20 year ownership at 15k miles a year. Yes the Tesla inside is pretty dire compared to Merc Audi and BMW. But thats changing, The car industry when it finds itself again will pretty much eat into Tesla, its an apple style company and there are a lot of Samsungs out there....
