They were so busy thinking whether they could, they didn't stop to think whether they should.

I wish manufacturers had a better range of commercial products, especially in the car based van segment.

A stripped out M140i or Golf R van would be ideal for me, fun to drive and cheap BIK tax.

Surprised none of them do it, would likely replace a lot of double cab pick ups.

I know back in Ireland in the day you could get most hatchbacks as a van - it got commercial vehicle tax instead of the huge passenger vehicle tax. Then they realised that they could do the same with SUV's - so you could buy a VW Touareg or Audi Q7 with front seats only & the rear as a payload. Here's some gems - although a lot of them look identical to the car with blackout glass & the seats folded down! There are 'official' conversions & sold by the main dealers. It's still big business apparently!

Current (outgoing) Ford Focus:

Current Golf:

Audi Q5:

Audi Q7:

BMW X5:

Disco 3:

Renault Megane:

Previous model Astra:

And a classic Sierra for good measure:

The hatch-with-no-seats is common in many other European countries, too - http://professionnel.citroen.fr/vehicules-utilitai...

Again, an Irish car. It's a huge market there, which probably peaked around the time that BX was built.
Golf Mk2 vans were very common, as was the Pug 205. I think those were both factory products though. There was a company in Rosslare that did most of the car based conversions though. It was widely rumoured though that they did the conversions from car to van, then sold the parts to convert it all back again if the owner desired. Many vans were indeed converted back to cars, but they forgot to change the tax class back too. Funny that.

Yup. RHD for RoI, never sold here.

We had 205 panel vans here - normal 3dr, but with the side windows blocked off. Then there's the French 205F, which is the front half of a 205, and a C15-like rear end.
