Can you apply the weight of those cars to your summary though? These things are nearly 200 kg more than the Impreza of that era.

I love the look of them, but that weight puts me off. They're more in line with the following generation of Rally Reps from 2001 in that respect really.
I was responding specifically to the post implying that ~240bhp was underpowered for a 2.0L Turbo.

It's stablemate, MR2 Turbo. In the dry it can launch just as hard as a GT4 can as long as you haven't got LingLongs on it!
I can agree with this as well, I've always enjoyed the traffic light GP(its surprising how many are up for it too!). The MR2 Turbo was the only car I had fun with in my 200sx that had me off the line! When I eventually got some grip I was pinned to its rear bumper though.

All this Jap chat is making me want another!...a Supercharged/Turbocharged GT86 would do me nicely! cooldriving
They're great cars alright smile

thumbup

I eventually got chatting to the owner of it, and I've always held them in very high regard after my experience with the MR2 Turbo. smile

That's a full spec Grp A car with some VERY trick (read expensive bits on it). Not the same as a standard GT-Four, the best examples of which you can still pick up for less than £10k as opposed to a £50k bog standard Impreza P1.
That was the point - you can get a Group A GT4 for similar money to a P1.

Group A GT4 *could* be road legal in the UK too.
“Full spec Group A” wouldn’t still be running 5 stud hubs.

It’s a nice car, but let’s not pretend it’s anything like a full spec TTE Group A Celica.

What was your S14 putting out? MR2 and GT4 usually eat them stock vs stock. MR2 Turbo is still an absolute weapon to this day the mid mount launch got them to 60 in 5.2 and mildly modded one surprised many EVO or STI.

yes a few breathing mods and a touch more boost, and you'll be seeing 60 in comfortably under 5 seconds.

What would it have instead? They didn't use centre lock on the rally cars.

My 200 was running about 250bhp and 16 psi boost, I timed it at 5 seconds dead to 60 and it was quicker than my mates Sapphire Cosworth running 270bhp off the lights(just).

The chap in the MR2 Turbo said his was running about 260bhp. I remember getting away from a chap off the lights in his 300bhp R33 Skyline(rwd model), and he was shocked and he asked me what I'd done to it.

I had so much fun in my 200sx looking back, plus it was a hoot to go sideways in...when the opportunity arose(Very often!). biggrin

S14 was 0-60 6.5 and 1/4 15.2. Not really on same level as the MR2 or GT4.

Yes and as standard the S14 was a fair bit slower than the MR2 and GT4. My 200sx was only running 10 psi boost as standard but wind the boost up(16psi)/run colder plugs, ditch the cats and free the breathing up with a filter/stainless exhaust and it makes a massive difference.

I still remember taking it out after it had been fettled and the difference was incredible, at the time it was £800 very well spent.

Yeah all that old jap turbo stuff was cheap to get extra power out of, Rev3 MR2 with manual boost controller at 1 bar aftermarket intercooler breathers and cat removed was up at 300bhp your guy on roads untraveled had his at the dyno was pushing that on standard ecu.

Not the same nowadays as all these hot hatches with 300bhp+ are forged from factory but still the 3SGTE, SR20, 2JZ, K20 are still being used by the tuners as they are way more characterful engines and hard to bust.

4 stud hubs were used on all 3 generations of Celica GTFour in the Group A era.

Driveshafts suited to the 4 stud hubs were only compatible with the 6 speed X-Trac box and vice versa.

The best car I ever owned bar none. Mine had every TRD upgrade on it including the carbon dials and interior trim - one of two in the country at the time (2006). Stunning cars. Made 286bhp and 268lbs at Surrey Rolling Road with a decat and an HKS mushroom thingy (blimey that sounded amazing!)

Ah, don't tell me that! That's glorious – stop tempting me. I was bidding on this last year as I was absolutely besotted by it. The price got pushed up too high for my liking in the end (you could have bought one from a specialist for the same amount and at least have tested it in the process) so I bailed out. Seemingly needed a few bits, too.

Still regret that decision slightly, though...

I've had many homologation specials over the years. For some reason I have never had the slightest pang for one of these of any iteration. At all.

I don't know why but I'd love to know. Perhaps one of the reasons is that they don't look separate enough to the boggo versions compared to things like M3s and Escort Cosworths.

Superbly engineered things, but felt like heavy buses against a contemporary Impreza or Evo which are built like Alfa Romeos in comparison. That doesn't mean they can't be hustled along quite well, but they do feel slower in terms of go, more so than the nominal hp deficiency would suggest.

Still have nightmares about changing a clutch in one, took a whole weekend - that superstrut suspension is a complicated bugger!

A black RC was the first GT-Four I drove, I then looked into them a bit more and found that an ST205 was within my budget so bought one. I owned it for about 12 years
