Renaultsport Sport Renault RenaultSport Clio Sport 182 Sport rolleyes

Most reliable car I’ve ever owned incidentally, although I replaced almost everything on mine before it caused a problem, I think the only original bit is the engine and the alternator.

I spent an ungodly amount of money on mine so now it’s ridiculous on the road but amazing on track..

Pistonheads writers, could we please stop using the world 'less' in instances such as the above? The word should, of course, be 'fewer'.

"30,000 miles on a clutch is regarded as not bad."

Really? Mine has it's original clutch and is nearly on 135,000 miles.

I have owned mine since it was on 68k and I'm not really interested in owning anything else. As long as you cut it some slack sometimes and spend some dosh on it every now and then, it has been great.

He's clearly not seen them on slicks at a track day.

Ridiculous bang for buck.

One of the best cars I have ever owned. Mega reliable if serviced regularly, easy to work on and so cheap to run. Think £25 for an oil filter change.

Belts aren't cheap but you cannot skimp on this, go to one of the recognized specialists and no where else. Suspension bits are for nothing and they are super quick on track with only minor mods, most importantly though they are HUGE fun!

I'm a huge fan of these, having owned about 5 over the years (and I still do own one). The reason I've had so many is because three of the engines packed in and one had a dodgy gearbox. This is despite me getting the servicing and belts done, and only ever using the cars as my daily (not on the track).

My friends and family think I'm mad for persevering with Clios but when they're working, at least, they drive so well.

The example in SOTW isn't great though and only worth a grand in my opinion.

I firmly believe you cannot have more fun for the money. They are fantastic cars, even got the Clarkson seal of approval, years after the release.

I ran a 172 Cup for 5 years and 50,000 miles. It never once left me stranded, aside from when I ran it out of fuel once.

It could do 50mpg on a run, it could do 50mph around every corner, and cost 50 pence to fix. Relatively speaking.

In the end, it barely had any money off me, it held what little value it had, very very well.

Also, in the last week my gearbox did this whilst gently pulling out of a garden center: biggrin

Still love it smile
Poor thing was probably aghast at having to mix it with the Honda Jazz beige stuff at the garden centre.
Garden Centres? Just say no!!

Yes you can. Any supermini with ditchfinder tyres on a cold wet morning in Preston will provide hours of fun.

That's like saying a political deal is a good deal because Liam Gallagher said so.

Took my 172 from 50k to 110k with no major issues. Bottom pulley, Radiator and an injector where the only major items. Got 32mpg on average too! Absolutely battered that car, miss it lots.

Reliability is not an issue if looked after properly.

Yeah, those terrible "disposable cars", this one knocking 15 years old and still looking remarkably tidy, as or the "Driven by Chavs", do you mean as cars get old people with less money to spend buy them ? who would have thought that ?

Anyone who knows a thing or two about cars will acknowledge that these are a good little machine and very capable both on road and track, to say otherwise (a la derogatory comments overleaf) just lays out your ignorance for everyone to see.

I own a mint standard 172 cup at the moment. It goes like a rocket and the way it handles is just fanastic, it's like a go kart. It's powerful NA engine makes it feel alive with none of the lag present in turbo cars (i.e. Megane RS which I also own). Lots of throttle response, cheeky characterstics, overall a fun little car. Yes you get the odd rattle in the cabin but it's a 2005 car. Show me another similar aged vehicle with no niggles.

I am always suprised by peoples view that Renault is a mechanically unreliable brand. I have had loads of sporty french cars since I started driving and had no issue with any of them. Yes you get bad ones but this is true of any marque. Conversely the most annoying cars i've owned have been German, problematic and expensive to repair. I also take note of cars I see broken down on my daily drive and they're hardly ever French.....go figure.

In relation to their capability, they are underrated by anyone who doesn't know what they are.

172 / 182, great little cars, I expect their value to rise exponentially as the number of nice examples decrease.

Would have to disagree, the Williams is probably the most fun car i've driven, handling was just perfect and for only having 150hp it seemed faster than it should have been, you must have had a duffer with a noisy exhaust.
Well I have to say it was owned from brand new. Services and maintained properly.

It was simply garbage.
I don't doubt your experience but I am surpised by this, when you say garbage how do you mean? In terms of reliabilty or it's performance / handling etc.

My pal had one and it was great. Fast and fun, what's not to like!

We had a 182 for a while in the pool of cars at home and it was a great car, fast, very revvy without being torqueless and handled superbly!

I would have another if one came up for the right money and I was in the market!

I owned a mint Williams 3 and it was one of my all time favourite cars. owned several 172s in various guises including a 172 cup I bought brand new. I was lucky enough to find a lovely little 172 cup for sale on gumtree 18 months ago that was due belts/mot and some tlc, was up for a grand. the seller had a queue of buyers and I had got in touch with him half an hour after he posted it up. turns out it was previously owned by someone on cliosport forum who had spent loads of money on refreshing suspension parts previously and handled like a dream on new cup shocks and eibach sportlines. I took it to well renowned local renaultsport specialist and told them to go over the car, new belts/dephaser, brakes all round, new mot etc. spent a fair bit on it but reckon I got an absolute bargain. its just a weekend toy for me now garaged over winter. fitted some bilstein b14 coilovers and camber bolts and had the wheels refurbished and its a proper go kart.

I wouldn't fancy my 172 as a daily but for a fun weekend car that will keep up with ANYTHING through the twisties these have to be the best bang for buck around. As recommendations go from car people I respect - Henry Catchpole, Jethro Bovingdon and Harry Metcalfe all have one.

I’ve had a 2005 182 since March this year
Just started to doing track days
Love it to bits it’s such fun
Currently de bugging it correcting previous owners diy repairs
Clio man in Littlehampton has been brilliant
Agree that good tyres transform the car
Probably paid to much and spent to much on it and planning to spend even more going forward
It’s a keeper planning to keep it until I give up on track days
Even if it lunches it’s engine and gearbox it will be repaired
As for it being a chavs car who cares
My baseball cap fits perfectly on my 60 yr old head
