maximum speed on motorway?

The stretch from just after Preston up to Carlisle can often be done at that, very rare to see a copper up that way.
I've often seen the "safety partnership" van sat on one of the bridges between between J36 and J40 - obviously a mostly empty stretch of motorway is a massive safety risk...Low 70s for me, the small time saving by going any quicker isn't worth the extra fuel cost or risk of getting a ticket.

and on a 400 mile journey you turn up an hour late, get a satnav bro
Ah yes, all those 400 mile journeys I never do every week. Regardless, a 400, 40, 4 or 4,000 mile journey will still have me leaving at an appropriate time to reach my destination by any required time.Speed Badger said:
No it was only about 20 miles of motorway. If I was doing a long journey I would aim for a higher average speed. I guess where I live (South East) the motorways always seem to be mega busy and could only dream of doing 90 anytime before midnight!
My assumptions were "half way round the M25" = 60 miles and "into Surrey" = 20 miles. Rawwr said:

The fact I wasted those 40 mins on here is irrelevant
Totally depends on the motorway and time of day.
In rush hour, 70-75 mph as there doesn't seem much point going quicker.
Outside of rush hour depends on the motorway e.g. on the M1 I know where all the HADACS3 cameras are, so will cruise at 85-90 and slow to 75 to go through them and speed up again. I'll often go above 100mph but only in small limited blasts.
Bad weather, I drive to the conditions.
Key irritations are the idiots that drive in lanes 3 and 4 doing 70mph and don't pull over, the is worse in lane 3 (of a 4 lane m/way) and then the planks that don't understand the simple 2 second rule (3-4 in rain and snow) and drive way to close, even when they don't want to pass.

In decent conditions I try to go no faster that an indicated 85-90. Which means that, allowing for speedo error, I'm probably doing mid-70's to low 80's. Which means I'm unlikely to get pulled by unmarked plod.
It's also very relaxing as the car is barely breaking a sweat and it keeps the mpg (boredline) sensible.
In poor conditions/heavy traffic obviously much slower.
And where there are average speed cameras I just flick on the cruise control.
Round town where there are 20mph limits but very few cameras and even fewer feds I tend to stick to rolling burnouts and doughnuts when I go to get the papers.

Heavy traffic - go with the flow
Medium traffic - 72ish, enough to get past people but not silly
Light traffic - 78-82 depending on how much of a "rush" I felt in
Used to drive a lot faster but found a while ago that knocking 5-10mph off my speed made me much more relaxed after the drive.
A lot of my driving is done for work, so I'd rather sit in a car whilst being paid, then sit in the office.

In the olden days before the internet, satnav, smartphones and when you would expect there to be actual Police out and about I had two rules;
1, Never go over the ton. At the time folklore dictated that whilst you'd get a bking, a fine and maybe upto six points, you wouldn't get banned. I never got caught and used to love going 0.98 leptons.
2, Never be the fastest. If there were Police about, then my logic dictated they would got for the faster vehicle.
And then the internet happened and sometime after (maybe ten years) I joined Pistonheads, saw the error of my ways and now I drive at least 30mph lower than any speed limit. In 20 zones that may mean I have to do 10mph going backwards, minus 10, just to be safe.
But at least I'm not speeding, which as we all know is the absolute most important thing of all things that are important not to do.

and again people on a motoring forum geering at someones doing 90mph laughable really
I don't think it's people jeering at you, more that grown ups realise that due to traffic, speed cameras, weather conditions it's not always possible to sit at a minimum of 90 unless on their iBoxDelicaL400 said:

Cumbria seem to have a camera van permanently on it with unmarked cars enforcing as well

So iv'e always done minimum 90 max 98 on motorway but seem to speed past most other traffic. Not after a lecture about speeding i take that risk on my head but i feel the slower you go the more steering and throttle input. Not many go at this speed would like to see if i'm in a minority on a motoring forum?
There are certain parts of the “smart” sections where the cameras are live 24/7 not just when variable limits are in force
Not as fb would have you believe at 72mph .. but live nonetheless
Interestingly ( for me ) on my regular commute in/out of Manchester at all times of the day/night and in various traffic conditions on my 40 mile run I found that “making progress when possible” would save me about 5-10 minutes compared to a relaxed drive
