RE: Nissan Pulsar GTI-R | Spotted
Discussion
Really lusted after one of these, especially after playing Gran Turismo, they were the days!! but after finally being in a position to buy the test drive left me a little cold, after my highly tuned RS turbo Fiesta it felt, well a little slow really and the handling did'nt really float my boat either, remember being pretty gutted that sunny day back in 2003!

I remember these looked really wild, from the out side, but it looks quite tame now.
This. My memory is telling me that these look mental. Other than the bonnet vent, it's about as exciting to look at as an Almera!Back in my youth, I had a stage 1 ish s14a 200sx running around 280hp.
I was sat at some lights in Bishop’s Cleeve in Cheltenham, and a lad I sort of knew pulled up next to me in a white GTI-r. He was 4 up and I was alone.
I said to myself..I got this.
Lights went green, I hooked up the perfect launch. I was leading...
Then he went past me like I wasn’t even moving.
Such an ugly car but wow. So fast!
Turns out he was running 400hp

A work colleague had one of these back in the day which had been mildly tuned and it kept up with a sports bike so it must have been pretty quick as the bike was trying to shake us off!
my current next door neighbour had one he spent an absolute fortune on. he reckoned it was running around 600hp, i have my doubts about the claimed power, but it was bloody quick. will have to show him this article, he still wished he kept the car. i think he sold it to get the money toward the deposit to buy the house from his father. An utter dream car when I was a lad going, turning through pages of Max Power, Redline and Fast Car. Lowered on a set of bigger rims I thought (and secretly still do) thing they look the business! I heard about the poor brakes on imports, but assumed everything else was OK.
They looked absolutely mental and there was all that tech and power wrapped up into a hatchback body. At the time, for time there was no compariso, given my next favourite was probably a 1.4SR Nova...
Really interesting to see that contemporary road test where the Escort Cosworth felt other-worldly compared to the Sunny GTI-R and Integrale.
- It confirms that the Integrale is actually nothing special to drive (I drove one briefly once and loved the looks, but not much else).
- They must all be crap these days as I remember the then new Subaru Impreza WRX embarrasing the Escort Cossie on Top Gear, and I remember hating the WRX for being an overrated, understeering mess.
Sadly, with the cars above, it seems a case of don't meet your heroes! I'd happily have all of them just to look at though.

Hi Lee
Yes the I/c position was a big issue when they were developing the rally cars - more of an interwarmer!
Yes and we always used to say the same as what you have called it! Yes the I/c position was a big issue when they were developing the rally cars - more of an interwarmer!
They canned the rally program just as we got the road cars over here
