Do you think the news of this triggered the angry reaction in the tube station today?

The weight save point is a complete misnomer surely... The V8 weighs 40kg more than the fourpot... even if the motor weighs literally nothing you still need a battery to provide enough energy for a meaningfull period of time.

Hybrid is definitely coming but it's not for a weight benefit. I agree with a couple of others, they'll use the C/E53 3.0 six.

Per litre, one of the most economical cars on the road (W204); can’t think why they need to improve it.

If they do it, the main reason will be cost savings on development.

No need to build a chassis that can accomodate multiple engine configurations, just do a Volvo and use the same engine for everything and turn the power up or down.

Annoying though it is I could never afford to own or run a C63 anyway. The more depressing thing to me is that you know this is going to mean a bump in power for the smaller cars. A hot hatch now is a £30-50k 400bhp 4WD rocket ship with numb handling and it's getting worse every day. If you're going to downsize something then try weight, get the bump in performance, handling and a drop in emissions without making it unaccessable.

Made me laugh! That must have been one booooooring drive. I can get my E63 up to an average of 27 driving at 60-70 on a slow motorway, but it's no fun! Normal average is 19, same as my E46 M3 and the 2.8 Passat V6 I used to have which was about a 1/3 of the BHP!

Yep, North Yorkshire to Silverstone.

Pretty steady I have to admit.

The car has averaged 22.9 in 7000 miles, so I’m pretty pleased with it.

That's good going for the W204 - My M235i has only averaged 25.8mpg over 22k...

Not read the other 3 pages, so sorry if repeating others here, but surely buyers will just buy a 4 pot A class saloon or shooting break over a similar engine C class. Largely the same as they are, remove the V8 USP and that kind of says why bother spending more?

If this turns out to be true it will be a sad day indeed. Will the E63 still have a proper engine?

It's inevitable I suppose, much like death, but that doesn't make it any less sad, much like death.

This reminds me of when I sold my E53 X5 4.8iS for a E61 520d...trust me when I say that going from a V8 engine to a 4 cylinder engine is very depressing!! cry

If Its true then this has come as a bit of a shock in fairness. I'd advise anyone who hasn't experienced a V8 petrol engine to grab one while you still can! cloud9

Because EVs are rewriting the rules, that's why! A Tesla P100D, which is faster than the C63 can do around 130 to 150 mpg on a normal drive. Driven carefully, it can do around 180 to 200mpg. That's why big engined ICE are effectively obsolete.......

I don't buy it. Surely they wouldn't put huge amounts of money into developing their new inline 6 and then shove a four-pot in the range topping C-class?
Does that engine fit under the bonnet of a c class?

Well, unless Ive missed something the A Class is a FWD-bias AWD with a transverse layout and the C Class will still be a RWD longitudinal layout. Both will have same engine, but hope the C Class will still be better to drive.

Keep the V8 and tell folk its a hybrid,

If they ask, show them it has a four cylinder engine on one side and another four cylinder engine on the other side/

fk off!

Can’t we just lobby the most polluting countries in the world to just do their bit instead of punishing us! What next?- environmental tax on home improvements? Tax on how many times you flush the toilet or fart each day?!

This is the beginning of the end.
Chaps, our kids won’t know how good we had it with V8s and V12s.
It now 4 pot engines or big AA batteries in toy cars with iPads in the centre.

Agreed.

But if it turns out to be true then the move away from ICE is happening behind the scenes quicker than I thought...
Why wouldn’t it? The infrastructure cannot just be changed on the eve of the ICE ban. There is that to contend with but also the possibility of ever more punitive regulation to try and predict. I’d be surprised if there isn’t more than a modicum of truth in this.
