£200 for an exhaust for my old S Type R.
£30 for LED headlight lamps for my MR2.

As said previously, i hate the idea of chucking money at a car to make it more what you want.
Just sell it and buy something closer to what you want.

At least that way it will retain its value come resale.

One day i will swap a 1uzfe into a Prius though.

started as...

an encounter with an old lady who couldn't decide what part of the road she belonged on lost me a door mirror so the path started... new retro mirrors were purchased and I lucked out getting hold of a cheap GT500 bonnet

[url]

Next up were some lovely 20's wrapped in 255/45 up front and 295/35 at the rear together with some Roush lowering springs and uprated shocks

At this point I thought that I might as well add a Roush rear spoiler and some stripes

and then, like an idiot, I sold it frown

The only non-idiotic thing I did was to make a profit on the whole thing (mods included) - that profit was lost on a future toy which was kept (nearly) standard frown

This is why I like to buy modified cars.
Someone spent st least 3k on bolt on my ep3 as well as mapping etc.
Never would I dream of ploughing that money into a car but happy to buy one that's been done well.
Some bargains to be had.

10k on the engine/trans in my mk1
Couple on the paint, few on the suspension and brakes, couple more on the wheels... got about a third back not my finest hour bloody good fun though
what engine is that?
2.8 24v VR6 enlarged to 3.0 forged pistons, steel rods, schrick cams, gas flowed head, Jenvey 45mm itb’s, msd ignition with DTA management, custom exhaust, with a vwms box and Gemini plated diff,
317hp and 274lb
Sounds like a bloody hard way to 105bhp/litre but fair play!
You’ll probably prove me wrong but I think that’s bloody good for a naturally aspirated car! V6 7800 redline.. oh and it only tipped the scales at 765kg what’s that 414hp per ton?

Edited by Ashtray83 on Saturday 9th November 22:54
Not knocking the effort as clearly there’s a lot involved. Quite a few cars leave the factory with higher specific outputs though, thinking Hondas and BMWs mainly. For me 100bhp/litre is kinda the lowest I’m interested in.
I know what you’re saying! please bear in mind this was 10 years ago when the 20vt was not a common transplant and was about the same weigh all things considered plus I wanted to do something different, The noise it made was worth the money alone. power to weight was the most important factor in my build
Any more pics? I had a nice Lhasa green 1.8 8v about 10 years ago now.

How do you find the handling with all that weight hanging over the front of the car? I suppose it helps put the power down but the torque steer must be pretty impressive.

I recall a lad who did a very good g60 conversion to his and it was constantly popping drive shafts. It just never appeared to be on the road for very long until something else needed sorting.

I'd say that's not so much the case these days. There was a time when any money spent modding a car was accepted as being ''dead money'' and you'd never expect to get that money back... but what with current bubble prices of virtually all sports/performance cars most modded cars come up for sale now with asking prices that at least suggest the owner feels they're entitled to recoup every penny they've put into the car.

I've spent about 8k on my Elise S1 Sport 160 with probably another £5k at some point on the engine:

- Nitron dampers
- Faster steering rack
- Upgraded brakes
- Harder engine mounts
- Sports exhaust and induction
- New clutch and lightweight flywheel
- Sports seats and harnesses
- Straight cut gearbox with UCR ratios and quickshift
- Upgraded radiator.

It is now a stunning drivers car and nothing short of a modded GT 911/air-cooled or Caterhams/Atoms can hold a candle to it. Love it!

Spent around £5k on my E36 328 on suspension, bushes, steering etc

£1k or so on the Caterham on lowered floors, aeroscreen etc. Will be around £5k on engine at some point.

About to spend a few grand on my Subaru too.

Only the wife's Nissan Note had stayed and will stay standard. Unfortunately I find standard, unmodified cars really quite dull unless we are talking exotica or the lightweight stuff.

So I won't stop modifying as I just end up driving around in cars with dynamic shortcomings which is hugely frustrating.

I bought a tired, rattly, rusty 1982 911 SC in 2012 for £7.5k

And spent £70k modifying it. Everything has been replaced or upgraded. Engine is now a 3.6 Varioram, gearbox rebuilt with Quaife LSD, suspension is Bilstein Street Sports, brakes, etc. Backdated to a 72-ish look without wanting to try to faithfully recreate any particular car, but picking bits I liked from the back catalogue.

I then took it to Germany and drove the Nordschleife.

Why did you change the wheels? Advans are just so JDM
Back then they were passe, plus they could only take a 235 tyre so were useless when the car was tuned. Lots of JDM things are pretty naff, Advans included imo, I'm not one to do something to my car just to fit in

Each to their own and all that but manufacturers need to appeal to a broad base and keep product safe/sane/sellable. Which is not what I want from a car..

Agreed. I tend to make subtle improvements these days, though.

Straight line performance for the road is usually adequate these days.

I don't think there has been a single car or bike which hasn't been modified in my ownership. I have made some absolute howlers in my time, the yammagamma, which ended up being comprehensively outgunned by KR1s's and cost a similar amount to put together as my mate paid for his ZXR750. The various Mini's with random bits of 'race tat', which either ruined the handling, or made then run like dogs.

Despite never learning I think I have managed recently to redeem myself a little with the 130 and TVR.

Started out as a standard 130, to which was added some BMW performance bits and bobs. Sold for an E90 M3, then bought back. Then followed the bigger items, AP's, Birds Dynamic kit (Bilsteins, ARB's, drop links, all bushes changed), sold again, and bought back again biggrin Total spent, excluding the car is about £9K or so. I haven't added it all up but the Birds bill was 6K so that all seems about right.

It's only money, and the friends i've made along the way are worth far more than that. I can't get attached to modern cars, or cars which I haven't put my own stamp on. They're just transport to me.

IMG_7975 by roo_p, on Flickr

Then the Griff. Sad tale, friend died I bought it to restore and prevent them being shafed by a dealer flipping the car. A 'non running engine' turned out to be about as bad as it can get which led to a full rebuild. Then the paint, then interior, exhaust, before suspension, hood, dash, ecu...it goes on. This madness so far (because it will never be finished) is up to roughly £22K, plus the car. But, it is now a better Griff than TVR could have made, not that that's massively difficult biggrin

Top work, that's stunning... you need to create a thread about it, even if you only fill the thread with photo's.
