Mine ran out earlier this month, its been sat on the drive since, as I've been working on it to remedy some minor issues such as a wiper motor and wheel bearing, which will be sorted in the next few days once final parts arrive.

I won't be able to get it booked in before 30th.

Where do I stand I wonder?
The MOT ran out earlier this month... This does not apply to you.

If you MOT expires on or after the 30th March 2020, all vehicles will receive a 6 month extension. If you have a car due in January 2021 like myself, I am expecting that to be July 2021 now. All the guidance says you'll be given a 6 month extension after 30 March automatically, doesn't have a date to on it.
You are correct. They could have made this much clearer. Your situation is an example of how generous the system will be for people whose MOT isn't due for a while.
My daughters is due 31st March 2021; its expiry was 31st March 2020, we got it done on the 13th February, does that mean she effectively has 18m to get it done then?

Yes, I believe so.

I reckon once anything is passed law wise, the dates will be updated on the GOV website.

Any news on whether they intend to update the gov.uk web site history checker?
Mine's due August, still says August.

As above, they have to update some law or something beforehand so I suspect it will be after that.

As I read it, yes. If you'd had it done up to 30 days early (which many people do), the expiry date would have been 1 day over 12 months from 31st March, i.e outside the 12 months of the measure. Because you had it done VERY early, it should have an expiry date of 12/02/21.

Although, if you'd done nothing, you'd have received an extension to 30/09/20 anyway! Best it's done anyway I'd have thought.

This was discussed at length between govt and motoring bodies, and it would have aligned us with many European countries where it is first MoT at 4 yrs old, then every 2 years, but annually from 10 yrs old. The problem with that is that a car almost 6 yrs old will only have ever had 1 MoT test! The decision was to keep the present system. Commercial vehicles, taxis etc have more frequent checks anyway.

If he got the MOT done in mid February, that's too far from the original expiry date to be tacked on the end from it.

So his new MOT expiry should be mid February 2021 and subject to the extension.

Guess the question is what the system shows when updated, which I'm assuming will happen by Tuesday/Wednesday next week.

Although you seem to prefer reducing the period between MOTs rather than extending them!

Getting my dates confused, it was done on the 13th March, not February, which means the expiry is currently showing 31st March 2021, so I guess she gets 18m?

It was in response to the poster saying they MOT'd their daughters car over a month before it was due, then they were asking about whether they'd get an extension!

Surely she doesn't? The 6 month extension period will be over by 31st March 2021.

The end date for this is still very unclear on the gov website. It just says "from 30th March 2020, MOT due dates will be extended by 6 months". Funny that they provide an example of extension of an April MOT, literally the easiest scenario to figure out.

I have a feeling that this will extend MOTs no later than 30th March 2021. For example an MOT that is expiring on 1st December 2020 will now run out on 30th March 2021, not 1st June 2021.

I interpret it as every single vehicle with a valid MOT in place on 30th March will simply see 6 months added onto the expiry date, so in theory if your MOT was due on 28th April 20, and you had it tested a month early on 29th March 20, your MOT won't expire til 28th October 2021! 19 months MOT!

I'm quite prepared to be wrong, but I think that's the most extreme case.

That's how I read it too. Can't read anything to imply that wouldn't be the case, ridiculous as it appears!

We have one car due in May, the 6 month extension will be useful for this one. Other car isn't due till middle of January 2021, can't see restrictions still being in place then!

Can only assume that it is planned to maintain the spread of due dates throughout the year.

They'll release full details on the 30th I suppose when the new rules come in. Interesting that on the BBC site they said the 6 month extension period lasted 12 months, but it doesn't say that anywhere else.

It will be for exactly this reason. We don't have the MOT testing capacity for all cars to be due in one 6 month period.
