A used McLaren (of any vintage) appeals a lot.

It's just a shame their reputation for reliability or lack of it is so damning.

Maybe that's why some of them look like relative bargains.

It would still be a 458 for me but the performance difference between a 458 and a 720S must be hilarious. I think I could console myself with the noise the 458 makes.
yep, the reliability issues did huge damage, I was deciding between ferrari v mclaren and went against the mclaren because of the endless stories of trouble

the fact this is iterative would make me hope they will be reliable and, over time, the old stories will fade away and strengthen the ownership offering because they are magnificent cars

Good for you sir. Nice Christmas present to oneself smile What colour? Spyder/Fixed Head?

I wish I was in a position to buy one. I could just about stretch to the very bottom of the 12C market but it is just too much of a risk on an older car if something goes wrong.

From a buying guide to show you how bad the reliability situation is:

Locating the source of electronic niggles can be somewhat of a goosechase, so make sure you attend a diagnostics-equipped workshop to identify any electronic foibles.
A few owners have flagged-up clutch glitches, a simple fix, resetting the clutch-positioning sensors and updating the software. You can check how much is left in the clutch, and it’s certainly worth the trouble seeing as a new clutch kit will leave you £20k poorer.
The standard adaptive dampers are around £1500 apiece and are only purchasable in pairs, so check for any leaks.
A set of front pads alone is about £700, and if the discs are gone it’s £10k for a new set. So check they’ve been tested for wear and condition.
Bodywork corrosion isn't a major issue although some owners have reported issues around the rear arches.
TFT screens have been known to cause problems on occasion.
When new, a number caught fire – the perpetrating rear-arch liners should have been replaced.

'I bought one'

‘We got off to a shaky start when a faulty fuel sender left the car stranded on the hard shoulder of the M1. I also found the on-board computer unnecessarily complicated, and didn’t get on with the wheel-mounted indicator buttons.'

‘There have been a few electronic glitches and recurring warning lights, mostly relating to the traction control. But the only major issue was when it developed a serious-sounding rattle from the top of the engine at around 60,000 miles. They found significant camshaft damage. Fortunately, they agreed to authorise a repair under warranty.'
That was of course for a car with a yellow donkey on the front, not a McLaren. biggrin

I just can't warm to McLarens (other than the P1 and possibly the 600LT Spider).

The numbers are something else, I really really like the 720S and this moves the game on again.

Who buys these ? A new one, depreciation is absolutely massive. A used one, are you brave enough ?

I'd love a 720S, can't afford one by any stretch so mute points above.
Me, for one. Build completes on Tuesday. Collection, all being well, 9th December. Why, when I already have a 720s? So I can have it exactly the way I want it. And because buying cars is one of life's pleasures.
Great stuff, enjoy every bit of it. Don't forget to post us up some pics smile

Will there be an 800LT? Or is this truly the end?
Of course there will but not before the 750 LT, 750 LTS-R, 800S and they will all look identical.
You do realise they'd look the same because (if McLaren were to use those names) they would actually be variants of the same car (the current Super Series model)? It's a bit like Porsche offering the 911 as a Carrera, a GTS, a Turbo, a Turbo S, a GT3 Touring, a GT3, a GT3 RS, and a GT2, and nobody's complaining that they all look the same. Think of 720S, 750S, and 765LT as trim levels of the Super Series rather than models.

Congratulations, I would love to try a 720, never mind the 750. Great looking car, not a vast amount of weight, plenty of power, and lots of positive comparisons to Lotus. I very much enjoyed a short drive in the 12C, I can barely imagine how good the newer cars must be.

Yes, it's fast. I reckon this would be more fun to drive on some good roads though. It also weighs less but about half a moon smile

Exactly.
I'm not even taking any notice of the reviews, the 720 was so good if this is 1% better it's going to be a blast. I can't wait.

that was for the 458, generally a reliable ferrari

if you think I'm imagining the reputation mclaren's have for reliability problems then that's fine

(but I wouldn't check the mclaren depreciation charts versus the yellow donkey's biglaugh)

Absolutely love the look of these - and generally far more exciting than a 911…..
Just a shame the build quality and residuals are so scary

Yes it could. You have 600kg of thermal mass. It wont heat up that quickly.

Nevertheless I think the vast majority of people in this car would be actually scared by the performance of this if driven correctly.

Yes, like the silver wheels and light interior. Congrats.
