Apparently the DQ380 (7 speed) in the 7.5 is a bit better.
The Mk7.5 GTI has a 6 speed DSG, mine certainly did. It might just have been the PP and TCR that got the 7 speed?

My Mk7.5 GTI DSG was a great all rounder, but also rather anodyne and fun less.

I will be having a look at the Mk8.5 when it's released, probably the Clubsport.
For all it’s infotainment ills, the 8 is dropping nicely and if they’ve done a decent amount of software updates it could be a good car. You can already get an approved used 21 plate with 15k miles for under 27 grand… that’s only a couple of thousand more than a top spec 7.5.

I’d still err on the more proven car but clubsport 300s are going down as well…

Loved my mk7 gti performance pack, was fully loaded too with heated leather big sat nav and dynaudio panoramic roof and whatever else was an option,

Unfortunately 3 nights on the trot scrotes attempted to steal it so I got rid of it before they took it,

I'd pay money to see that hehe

Seriously though, the MK7 is a great car.

We've not got the GTi, but have the combo of an R & a GTD...so on average a GTi thumbup

Just recently got myself a 7.5 (2019) GTI PP DSG and almost 3 weeks in I am really liking it.
Its a daily so is perfect for commuting - and I must almost ashamedly admit that the assistance systems make that drive far less tedious - and it’s great fun when I want it to be and plenty quick enough. Seems easy to extract far more later down the line if ever it felt necessary.

I’d been torn between either the GTI and a 2019 S3 - the S3 was a nice drive with more power but it seemed very refined in comparison and a bit sterile, the Golf just felt more sprightly, probably due to the smaller turbo being more eager - as the S is basically the Golf R, I can see why people say the GTI is probably the ‘better’ experience over the R.

The Mk 7 Golf just looks so much better in svelte 3-door.

Possibly less practical, but it's a sporting hot-hatch, and the GTi concept originated as a 3-door. The 5-door models may be great for 'domestic duties', but look more boxy and mainstream.

However, don't like the black wheels on the example in the article - there are classier OE options.

I picked up one of the last Mk 7 GTIs when they were phasing them out for the 7.5. Hung onto it for nearly 7 years and really enjoyed my time with it. The only warranty work was the thermostat housing but apart from that everything else held up fine. It did pick up some squeaks and rattle over the years and I did manage to pick up damage on all 4 Santiago alloys as well.

It was fun to drive and I served me well. I only jacked it in as i wanted and EV and a bigger boot.

Not uncommon unfortunately, a friend of mine had a 2019 GTI, this happened, someone burning his patio doors whilst they were all in bed, car turned up as someone had bought it in good faith and taken it into VW and it all came to light that it was stolen.

Nearly 3 years in with my mk7 GTi DSG, 5 door, echo what others have said that its a brilliant all rounder. I can fit 4 young kids in + junk they bring no bother, drop them at activities/friends then drive home down a B road like I've sat on a wasp. Mines a 2017 on 65k, only had to replace tyres in my ownership. I've had all sorts of hot hatches before (306 GTi-6, mk2 Focus ST, phase 1 Clio 172), the Golf lacks the character of the ST, the go kartness of the 172 and the lairy handling of the GTi-6 but is has a little bit of all those cars rolled into 1 combined with great day to day usability. Only the GTi-6 came close to being as good an all rounder and I kept that 8 ish years I loved it that much, the Golf will be remaining for some time yet.

The Mk7 R is said to be a better drive than the S3. Have seen a few reviews now stating this.

I've had and/or driven most variants of R, GTI, and S3.

My favourite of those is the S1, but you can't fit baby seats in them so I got a GTI as 2nd best.

I recently bought a 7.5 3 door dsg performance pack for my wife. She loves it. I used to run a 7.5 R which was a bit floaty, but once I put some Bilstein B16 dampers and springs, plus swapped the cadburys clutch, became a much better car. The 2019 GTi we have is a much better drive TBH.

A Mk7 is a bit behind the 7.5 in a few areas, not least the dash, so worth the extra to get a 7.5.

I don't like 5 door versions as when you look right, at a junction for example, you are just staring at the B pillar. Also, IMHO the 5 doors look pants, but of course tastes vary.

I ran a mk6 three door white GTI for a few years as a company car. It had the DSG box, and although it said 207 bhp it felt much quicker than the 2.5 ST it replaced. MK7 defo improved the interior and exterior and performance and with the obligatory remap you cant go wrong. This one does look like it will smell of weed though

Just commenting on this thread. I haven't driven a Mk7 but yesterday I was handed the keys by a friend to drive his Mk5 because I have told him if he ever sells it I'd like first refusal. Unbelievably despite being a mid 50s aged petrolhead I had NEVER previously driven a Golf GTI!! I have been a passenger in a couple of Mk2s an also a Mk7 R, but yes, never driven one. Anyway, although I didnt drive far and didnt push it as Its not my car, I finally "get it". Just a fab combination of lovely ride (compared with most hot hatches and especially the wife's ST150!), smooth torquey turbo TSI engine and snickety gear change. I was really impressed and not many cars do that to me on a short drive. Personally I think the MK5 GTI is one of the best value modern classics out there and I can only imagine the Mk7 is that little bit better in every area....

I had been considering perhaps looking for a 306 GTI-6 next year, but values have gone up a lot and they're that bit older now and likely to be ropier. This Mk5 Golf I drove was a 55 plate on 132K and has been lovingly looked after by its current young (under age 30) driver. Felt like it had done 60K miles, nice and tight, no rattles (aside from a rear drop link) and smooth engine. People say the Golf GTI is boring and predictable but at my age I just want something fairly comfortable and subtle looking which can get a move on down a favourite back road when the mood takes.

Yep, Golf GTI fans you have another convert. Apologies, I know this is a MK7 GTI thread, but I just wanted to pop onto a Golf GTI thread to report back my experiences with the MK5!!
