Whatever blabla I see you have a classic garage of reliable vehicles haha ! Priceless !

Priceless indeed. In the 21 years that I've owned my MG it's cost me less in repairs than the 4 years of your warranty claims. My 9 year old Evoque has never had a single fault.
Maybe you like taking your car back to the garage- I've got better things to do laugh

What are you on about I’ve owned it since new ?
You're a bit of a touchy sod aren't you, looking at your other replies. More like what are YOU on about when it was aimed at sheepshanks.

Having said that, the Inchcape VW dealer we use said the warranty they use for non-approved used are more co-operative than the VAG Approved Used one - think it was run by Car Care Plan.

Well, no - it was the service manager telling me this - we had a Tiguan bought new and were discussing the VW All In warranty.
I see. Still seems a little... pushy, no?

I read stuff like this and then they go and buy another VAG dustbin. At least the people who repeatedly subject themselves to Land Rover quality and service get to drive a Range Rover for their trouble, VAG customers go through the same to have vinyl seats, crap ride, and a four banger diesel engine hehe
Whatever 350bhp and 4wd is enough for me maybe save hard and one day you can buy yourself something decent ?
I sense jealousy. He's had more decent cars than you know, you're just miserable. laugh

Absolute nightmare, Seat Toldeo heater radiator sprung a leak on sons car, the whole dash had to come out and then you find the bolts holding it are accessible from under the bonnet so a fair bit of dismantling there too.
Must be the very first part fitted to the bare bodyshell.
We did the job one weekend, never again.

Also never heard of this Silica bag, what's the point of the thing?

To prolong coolant life by soaking up any water content.

They can't sell the warranty as a stand-alone product so pushing it would have been pointless. It was meant as more of a dig against VW - they said Car Care approve stuff that VW would reject.

I expect Car Care probably want to keep the Inchcape Group sweet as they must be a massive customer, whereas VW wouldn't care less.

That could be an angle the OP could take - I know he's spoken to dealer already, but escalting within Vertu might be fruitful? I'm sure things like "peace of mind 12mths warranty" will have been mentioned

It would be simpler to specify coolant changes on the service schedule like most other manufacturers.
What next from those clever chaps at VW? Silica bags in the brake masterlaugh

It's silicate that's in the bags (or sometimes an insert in the header tank - the EA288 diesels had that) and it replaces the silicate that drops out of the coolant over time.

There's a school of thought that it's related to cambelt change timing - at 5yrs the belt and water pump gets changed and the coolant is topped up with water. If the car used G13 coolant water causes the silicate fallout to increase and typically when the car is around 7-8yrs ish old the heater matrix becomes blocked.

Other manufacturers did it as well, but it seems to be mainly talked about with VW Group cars.

The bag of silica is in the coolant?
That seems like a good idea.

Thanks for the info, thankfully my old Japanese jobbies are too old for such novelties.
Hows that working out for you VW?

Does anyone know what year VW started adding silica to the coolant tank?

I see a couple of people have asked the same and it's gone unanswered. I think from previous (worried) research, it came in alongside the MQB platform My research consisted of looking up the silicon bag itself and which years it was applicable for. That and I couldn't see any mention on MK6 Golf forums.

Problem is, my MK6 Golf is a 2016 convertible, and I've just bought a 2016 Tiguan. Both are PQ35/PQ46 platform respectively, but are using the MK7 Golf engine.

Looks like the header tank should say Mit Silikant on the side - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZZHQSvdAvA

Going to show my ignorance here, again, but couldn't you remove the silica bag (or replace the header tank with a non gel one) fully drain and flush the system then put some normal OAT 5 year coolant mix in?, you can still get 5 litres of Comma red coolant for about £20 and 5 litres of deionised water for a tenner max, its what i've been doing.

Or am i miles behind the times.

This was something I was utterly unaware of and having gone out to check ours, yep "Mit Silikant" on the side of the tank and a visible "bag" within it.

Looks like I can at least remove it without a new tank, although I'll still take the tank off first.
