I had an ID3 a few years ago and actually really liked it. Fully behind the new sportier version.

They're hopefully going to let the ID3 die as soon as it's possible to replace. Of the more than 50 new cars I've had over 35 years, this was by far the worst and one I was happy to get out of (with some considerably effort as virtually no one wanted to make a trade-in or cash-purchase offer). Everything negative that has been written about the car, from cheap interior, poor egonomics to software seemingly designed by students on work experience is true and the updates they've struggled to make haven't addressed the fundamental cheap development and design of the car. One to avoid unless you're given no choice on a car-scheme.

Either the later ones got better mine is Sep 23 but pre facelift, or I’ve just been lucky! 13k miles in 6 months and for what it is, it’s been absolutely fine.

Probably jinxed it now biggrin

Looks good to me.

Like it or not the EV 'hot hatch' is coming upon us slowly, at least the makers are trying to keep the hatchback going. Rather that or a 3 Ton ghastly SUV!

The GTX looks a bit better but on the whole never been a fan of the blobby styling or spartan interior of the ID 3. Not against moving to an EV eventually but at the moment I wouldn't consider any as a replacement for my Golf, However, I was impressed with the ID GTi concept previewed last year.

Back in the day we had the UJM (universal Japanese motorcar) it’s gone full circle. All the new EV releases are so blandly boring, just a facsimile of the next. Might as well buy the cheapest trim level you like and be happy. Because there’s literally nothing else to write home about!

How does that change with their forebears with different sizes of engine to create different performance models?

this.

I have a cupra born atm and it's a nice car but it is heavy and more power is always welcome

i'd get a GTX next but the reality is it's going to be £60k or something insane

recently i've been driving a model 3 which feels much nicer to drive and has more personality

the replacement for my born will probably be the mg x power @ £35k (430hp) or a used tesla model 3 performance

So little effort on rear brakes discs just rust away. Drums are more than adequate.

It’s an EV and a VW. A boringly predictable response from PH.
But fairly accurate. What appeal does this hold to anyone who remotely enjoys driving?
Depends on your definition of 'enjoying driving'. If you mean classic PH'er, loves sportiness, precision, keen handling, engagement and making every journey a watered-down track day, then it holds minimal appeal to any of them.

BUT.....I'd guess 90%, maybe 99% of drivers just see a car as transport, they enjoy deriving rather than getting a train/taxi/bus, but just the act of steering a car. My dad is in that category. Never craved a high-performance model, never took his cars above 3000rpm unless by accident, but he loves driving. He current drives a Kia PHEV car Niro I think. He very nearly went for an ID.3 as two of his friends and one of my cousins have them, and another family member has a bigger ID (4?).

It's painful for some to hear, but Tesla really have changed the automotive world. People knock them through ignorance or blind hatred, IME.

Had a look at the base version when new. It just smacks of cost-cutting, everywhere you look. E.g. The fuse box hasn't been moved for RHD cars so where there should be a usable glove box, half of it is the fuse box. There was also weirdly nowhere to put your knee in the rear next to the seat back on the door side if the driver is tall - the rear door card was unnecessarily wide and intruded.

Compared to a Tesla Model 3 they have poor quality materials, bad software, poor performance, much worse packaging and are just generally very expensive for what you get. I guess you might prefer one if you need a shorter car for some reason, but I can't see why else you'd consider one.
I bought the ID3 over a Tesla model 3. Turning circle was a big one for me actually. Being able to do a full turn on a mini roundabout outside the school. In the model 3, I would have to drive straight on and either 3 point turn somewhere during school rush hour, or just take a longer route. The ID3 has turning circle of a Polo, footprint of a golf, and cabin space of a Passat. Thats a good package IMO. And is 200hp rear wheel drive really 'poor performance' for a family hatchback these days? Perhaps it is. Plenty for most people though I would imagine.

I can't agree on the materials. The alcantara seats are really nice, and comfortable as well. Was worried about reports of the M3 seats melting/disintegrating, which was a well known issue back when I was ordering late 2021. The interiors have a lot of hard plastic on the ID3 which are nowhere near Golf GTI quality but thats where the tradeoffs have been made. Matrix headlights are a game changer and the overall spec is really high so when you look at where the money has went and where its been trimmed, the Tesla and ID3 are very different that way. No matrix lights in the Tesla, wierd automatic lights and wipers etc

M3 has a firm ride, ID3 is much better overall. Its not a very engaging drive, but its hugely predictable, rock solid and goes where you point it. The M3 is more jittery and just isn't great in an urban environment. Maybe the newer ones are better.

I think overall, there is little point in saying 'which car is better'. Its a road to nowhere argument, as there is no such thing as 'best car'. The only thing that matters is whats 'best for me and my family'. The cars are actually quite different, as I've highlighted above. The M3 excels in areas of which hold no real value to me, which is why it was easy to drop out of consideration. Great car for some people though, no doubt. Supercharging etc.

I'd enjoy driving this. I enjoy driving everything I've driven, but to varying degrees!!

Golf R - 316bhp and 0-62 in 4.7s , ID3 gtx - 5.6 and 326bhp so unsurprisingly the heavy EV is slower, @ £45k + when you've ticked a few VW options boxes it's looking pricey compared to an MG4 X power, it's been awhile since VW hot hatches have been vfm and electrification doesn't appear to come cheap, unless you are happy with a practical but underpowered Dacia with limited range.

I'm genuinely stunned that VW haven't fixed the front end on this yet.

It's just so bland and lacking in personality, even compared to it's in house VAG siblings, the ID3 is unforgivably dull.

I hope they've sorted out the cheap and nasty door cards on this one. The missus had one of the cooking models on a trial and I couldn't believe how poor the materials were compared to a Golf
