a strange quirk of human nature that some people who own the real thing will de-badge, and those who aspire to own the real thing will plaster badges onto their cars which suggest higher performance than it actually has.

The owners car, so fair enough he/she/it/they can do what they like.
Buuuuuuuut it does look bloody stupid.
Can't understand this mentality of being something you're not! Although it does provide much entertainment for car geeks like us! biggrin
Long may it continue! hehe

Badge says 'M' not 'M3" just means they've bolted on some M parts.

Twas Cribbs Causeway and it was very busy, although parking away from the disabled would only add another 10 seconds to the walk. I have no idea if the chap was/is/should be disabled but I have my suspicions he wasn't based on the fact that these spaces are usually filled with 80% non disabled. Met an old guy on crutches over the weekend (chip shop queue) who was moaning that his disabled badge was useless in supermarkets as the spaces were always filled by non disabled people's cars.

No. So they can keep each other company.

I thought it was usually people with the top of the range models (or at least ones with decent engines ie 328 and up etc) left the badges on and the ones with the pea shooter exhaust tended to de-badge.

Hate it when people do this. It's not like having a 330i is that bad, if anything an m3 is considered more of a cock's car than a stardard 3 series. My brother was recently stuck in traffic by a car badged as an M3 but obviously wasn't, being enranged and quite bored he rang me to do a number plate check, was a 320d. He then wound down his window when along side and said 'is that the new M3 diesel then?' wish I could have seen the look on his face

Didnt some Beemers have the M sport badges anyway?
M Sport versions and M cars are two very different animals. I have an M Sport BMW, the only M badge on view outside the car was one the previous owner had put on - needless to say it came off rapidly. The M Sport cars are distinguished by different bodykits and wheels not badges - certainly not factory fitted badges anyway. You can be pretty certain that any non M car with M badges is something the owner has done. What will always remain confusing however is that the ///M logo in both cases is the same.

Now where's that ebay advert for the W\\\ keyring when you need it?

Was about to say pretty much exactly the same thing. As far as I'm concerned, M badges look ridiculous on any car that didn't have them from the factory...

I de-badged one of my M3s (to keep people guessing as it was one of the first in the UK). To 'upgrade' one's car is unforgiveable.

Today, car park at John Lewis in Bristol.

Maybe it's a genuine one and this is a clever 'double bluff'?
Not only is it not an M£ but the registration plate is illegal. Where's the BiB when you need them.
