How is the room in an S2000? I am 6'8" and am thinking about getting a small, lightweight, fun, fast, usable and reliable car to use for trackdays, backroads, etc....I was thinking a used S2000 might fit the bill.

Great car, and unless it's been FI, all men are equal (for the main). Just take the airbox cover, that's enough for most people. I had 3+ years in mine, each time it felt special and it just loves playing above 6k.

I think it will tick most boxes, but at 6'8 you maybe a little exposed with the roof down, notwithstanding getting in/out.

I cut my teeth on www.s2ki.com (UK forum linky - http://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showforum=25) which was great fun - loads of like minded people and information. I think we had 100 S2000s on a jaunt around Wales once. Certainly worth a try.
I can recall going on a couple of these s2k meets - great fun. Great car too - just wish it had more low-end torque. I got rid of mine as it was simply too tiring on long trips (revving to VTEC just to make swift progress wore me out! ).
yes exactly - I admired mine more than enjoyed it. My shortest-lived car purchase I'm afraid.

I find there's usually a correlation with what the poster owns/drives.

You'll rarely see any digs or negativity from people who drive something decent.

IMO, you'll struggle even if you're built like a whippet.

I'm wondering why so many people are suggesting taking the airbox lid off. Its a STUPID idea - it makes it loud but its not a good sound, its horrible. And it suffers from heatsoak something cronic.

Do the sensible thing and get a decent induction kit (although the OE setup is pretty perfect so I've heard so you may end up loosing power) and / or a proper exhaust system.

Did you see the auction thread from a few weeks back:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

This 08 S2000 only made £13,700 (provisional admitedly, wonder what they took for it in the end)

That doesn't look right to me - an 08 with those wheels? Aren't they the wheels from the very first generation?
Looks like someone has swapped the 17" out for the 16" which looks tiny. If Honda can offer the CTR with 19" then why not the S2000 as it's
supposed to be their halo sports car model.

Still a nice car though, could do with a bit more low down torque. Honda should do a Type-R version with a turbo - now that would be nice.
rolleyes

19"s are for show only on the CTR...and it's suspension has been optimised around 18"s. Big alloys don't make a car good to drive, only to look at, and the S2000 is resolutely a driver's car.

As for a turbo Type-R?!? Do give me a break...you have NO idea what the brand represents, do you?!? banghead

But yes, they're 16"s from the '99-03 MY's in the pic. So someone somewhere has been playing silly b'ggers, which probably explains the ridiculously low price...wonder if it was an import without leather also?!? Provisional means it didn't meet the reserve, which means that's not a sale price at all, just an indication of lack of interest in a car that's been butchered about with.

£11.5k for a low-mile '04 isn't a bad price actually - forecourt retail on that would be £12-13k, private about a grand less. So no favours, but definitely not ripped-off...and at least you know its history. Congratulations, get a picture up, and get yourself on s2ki.com for some useful advice

I replaced my S2000 last month after three years with it and I loved it. I would agree that the revvy engine can be a little tiresome on very long journeys, but that was always quickly forgotten when I had the roof down having a blast round some of the local A roads! Lovely! Also the reliability of it was top notch, only ever in the garage for it's services.

Enjoy!

My mate had one as a test drive whilst his Accord was being serviced.

Frosty January Morning + Rear wheel drive novice + Lairy rear wheel drive = Binned S2000

187 miles on the clock!! Ironic thing was he had no intention of buying as his missus was pregnant at the time!

How does the Z4M compare to the S2000? Not in terms of pace (can imagine), but in terms of feel, feedback, poise, etc.?

Well he did not as far as I know. Was put on his Accord insurance for 24 hours as cost of £45 I think. He is by no means a bad driver or irresponsible. Just got caught out of his depth trying to push the car and learnt his lesson!!! Front wheel drive diesels form now on!!

IMO, you'll struggle even if you're built like a whippet.

I'm wondering why so many people are suggesting taking the airbox lid off. Its a STUPID idea - it makes it loud but its not a good sound, its horrible. And it suffers from heatsoak something cronic.

Now then Pal smile

Far be from me to disagree with your comments, however, to say it's a'STUPID,' idea is a little OTT. Having driven it for 17k without the airbox on I've never suffered any heatsoak, likewise you replace the airbox cover if you prefer the muted tone. Do you prefer roof up or down in rain?

Stupid IMO of course - I tried taking the lid off, I found that when out on a spirited run, and then into traffic (so the engine bay way pretty hot) it was kangarooing and generally had bugger all at the bottom end. In fairness the only other time I've done it is driving to the petrol station after 3 laps of the ring on the bounce.

Maybe I just drive harder than you hehewink

Don't get me wrong, I dont like quiet cars at all - the exhuast thats on at the moment is probably classed under "insane", I just think there are better ways to get a bit more volume if you are willing to spend a few quid.

As an aside, has anyone ever tried drillign teh airbox lid instead of removing it comepltely?

p.s. If its raining, I'll have the roof up confused

person crashes car > insurance company claims > person looses NCD

That's the way it normally works, even if you're driving someone elses car.

no claims discount

i'm sure thats a discount because you havent claimed on the policy

so if he was on a test drive or courtesy car from the dealer where the dealer was insuring then why would he loose his ncd?

as has been suggested after the whole ncd question came up - he had it on his own insurance then yes.

otherwise, bit like me driving the oh's car where i'm a named driver, crashing it and loosing the ncd on my car

Ok, so when you come to renew your car insurance and they ask "have you written off a car in the last 4 years" or words to that effect what do you then tell them? I reckon that it would affect your premium.

i tell them i've had a claim, they price the policy accordingly - my x% discount still comes into play.

my current premium is say £1000 and i get 50% discount - i pay £500

i've binned a brand new car and they think i'm a maniac - my new policy £10,000 my NCD is still 50% so policy of £5000

i'd have thought better of you than to confuse a guaranteed discount with price protection rolleyes
