Unless I can see some 'value' (to me) in getting her another car, then I don't see the point in changing.. however, I do quite fancy a Discovery / Defender as a weekend 'toy' and we could do with a bigger family car too as I can't change mine for another 2 years
I would be LIVID if my OH tried to have any bearing on my car choices, just as I'm sure he wouldn't like it if I had any bearing on his, though he did agree with my way of thinking on one thing, a cheapo Interceptor was a silly idea!

Does annoy me when I see so many men who seem to "choose" their wives cars. Fair enough if it's there choice and perhaps I'm a bit strange anyway, so perhaps you should all ignore me wink
If he's paying for it I reckon it's fair enough that he's got some bearing on it!
This world seems to be full of men who seem to think they are the be all and end all of every decision a couple is to make.
They are if he earns the money, now toddle off and make us all a cuppa poppet. wink

I completely agree, we have not been told who is spending the money here though? Never assume anything.

Not quite sure why everyone is getting their knickers in a twist about spending £13k on a second car. It's not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things & OP's wife may not want to trundle about in any old snotter.

OP. The V8 Disco is an awesome car. It is not the most economical car on the road, mind! But then if she is only doing a couple of thousand miles a year, then go for it, or look at LPG conversions to take a bit of the sting away.

This link is for a 2004 V8 LPG conversion with only 36k on the clock. Quite a tidy looking car with a decent spec.....

Otherwise, if you fancy staying with the Land Rover brand, I believe the last of the Freelander 1's fitted with the TD4 engine are supposed to be excellent cars. If you choose to look at Defenders, the 50th Anniversary special edition fron the late '90's is an awesome car (basically a NAS spec 90", with V8, Auto, Aircon, Leather etc). They tend to be fairly well looked after & go very well indeed. Because they are quite sought after, they are pretty much depreciation proof.

Of those I'd go with the third or the last one i.e. the Disco3 or Touareg.

Edited to add, if you can I'd wait until Spring as there must be a premium at present for these 4x4's in winter...........or I could be wrong,
I've been looking at these lately for myself rather than dip back into a company car scheme too........

Back OT; I have similar issues with my misses, although the kids are big and ugly enough to look after themselves. She does about 3k a year so the current compromise is she has a 4x4 for the poor weather but its a TT cab which allows her to enjoy the fair weather too hehe.

I would say to avoid all Freelander 1s with the exception of the diesel variant and then, check, check, check electrics. Tailgate must be functioning properly.

Had a few in stock over the past year and had one which we just ended up sending to auction (too many problems).

If I was going down the LR route, I'd stick with Disco, Defender and Range Rover variants but thats just my personal point of view.

Something more car like with a 4wd system may be worth a look?

Audi A4/A6 estate with the quattro system or as I'm sure was overlooked due to my posts going rather off topic X-type estate

LANDROVER DISCOVERY LANDMARK TD5- 71K- FSH- LEATHER (2004)

Yes, this is one of the actual cars that we have discussed - the Landmark is a good spec with leather etc as standard.

I do about 30-40k per year in my car so I need a diesel. As our 2nd car does such a low mileage, it might be worth considering the V8 Discovery as MPG won't be such an issue and they tend to be cheaper to buy too. Any thoughts?
I was going to say that the tax on the V8 would be a kick in the nads, but just looked and the TD5 & V8 both are highest band (£425)! So yeah the V8 well worth a look, earns plenty of bonus points for sounding nice and being revvy driving

Legacy is a good shout - fuel economy is crap (esp. the 260bhp Spec-B biturbo boxer-6 biggrin ), but handling is good, it's closer to 5-series size than 3-series, and has Subaru reliability. One set of rims for on-road handling, one smaller set with M&S tyres for winter and 'modest' off-roading.

If I can find a good manual Spec-B when we need 'practicality', that's top of the list (over the wife's protestations, I must add - she wants a 330i Touring).

Yes, the A6 / Allroad is a possibility as the A4 would be no bigger than her current 3 series.

In a couple of years the 'width' thing won't be such a problem but currently with 1 booster seat and 1 baby seat this tends to mean that our 9 year old is a bit 'squashed in' to say the least (and no, his name isn't Billy Bunter!!)

Allroads seem to do quite well too. So if you buy and don't think much ... they seem to sell quite easily.

Could be a silly suggestion but something with a lot of back room - XJ6?? Far from a 4x4 though wink

Couldn't one of the kids just sit in the front of the car? Of course not when both adults are there lol but if it's just one of you and the kids??

Can't fit 3 kids on the back of a 3 series so need a 7 seater? That's bonkers surely? I may not have kids but I bet they fit just fine.

OP. Can you stretch another £1k or so to allow Disco 3's to become attainable? I know they fit 3 child seats across the back, as a good friend of mine had to chop his 6 month old Cayenne Turbo in for one a year or so ago when his wife told him she was pregnant again with their 3rd. Depite using all the man maths he could, there was no way he could fit 3 full child seats in the back of the Pork.

O/T, but I think the depreciation hit on the Cayenne nearly killed the poor guy!!!!!
